UCLA 15, UC Irvine 8

LOS ANGELES — A seven-run third gave UC Irvine a 7-6 lead but third-ranked UCLA scored in every inning except the third and the seventh to hand the ‘Eaters a 15-8 loss Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

The loss dropped UCI to 23-14 overall while the Bruins, coached by former UCI head man John Savage, improved to 29-8.

Shaun Vetrovec’s (Newport Harbor) second start of the season was short-lived as the freshman was chased from the game after giving up four runs on three hits and a pair of walks.

UC Irvine 6, UC Davis 3

The host Anteaters overcame a 2-0 deficit with three runs in the fourth inning on its way to the Big West Conference win on Sunday.

The triumph clinched the eighth straight weekend series victory for UCI (23-13, 10-2 heading into Tuesday’s nonconference game at UCLA.

Freshman Cole Kreuter was two for two with two runs batted in and two walks to pace UCI’s nine-hit attack.

Senior Kris Paulino was two for four with one RBI and one run, while junior Mikey Duarte was two for four with two runs.

Junior Mitchell Holland was one for three with two RBIs for UCI, for whom senior Evan Manarino allowed one earned run in seven innings to improve to 4-1.

Freshman Cameron Bishop threw two shutout relief innings to earn his first save.

Bethesda 3, Vanguard 2

A two-run home run by Brett Collins gave the host Lions a fourth-inning lead, but two unearned runs helped the visitors rally in the nonconference game Tuesday.

Bethesda, which had only three hits, cashed in Vanguard’s only error for those two unearned runs in a three-run sixth to prevail.

Brock Eissman was two for four for the Lions (33-16).

Bethesda is 26-22.

MEN’S TENNIS

UC Irvine 6, UC Davis 1

The host Anteaters’ Big West Conference win on Sunday allowed them to share the conference regular-season crown and earn the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Big West Conference Tournament.

Jonathan Hammel and Tyler Pham won in singles and doubles to pace Sunday’s win.

Pham won at No. 2 singles and Hammel topped his opponent in the No. 5 spot. They paired to win at No. 2 doubles.

Sebastian Heim (No. 1) and Shuhei Shibahara (No. 4) also posted singles wins for UCI, which won at No. 1 doubles thanks to Justin Agbayani and Jonathan Poon.

UCI (19-12, 4-1 in conference) faces the winner of the quarterfinal match between No. 4-seeded Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and No. 5-seeded UC Riverside in a semifinal match Friday at 3 p.m. at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

The final is Sunday at 1 p.m.

Claremont Mudd-Scripps 7, Vanguard 2

The Lions suffered their first loss of the season and dropped to 25-1 on Tuesday.

CMS is ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division III and improved to 24-2.

Stefan Kilchhofer (Vanguard) defeated Warren Wood, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, and Filip Burnac (Vanguard) defeated Max Macey 6-4, 0-6, (10-6) at No. 6.

WOMEN’S GOLF

Big West Conference Championship

DAVIS – UC Irvine freshman Camille Wagg finished seventh in the tournament concluded Tuesday at El Macero Country Club.

Wagg’s 54-hole total of 224 included a career-best 72 in the second round helped her post her career-best finish. Her previous best in previous tournaments this season was 42nd.

UCI freshman Kelsey Kawaguchi (234) was 27th, while sophomores Kaley In and Samantha Chan tied for 30th at 236.

Junior Kristin Henno was 37th at 242 for UCI, which finished seventh among eight teams, 68 shots behind champion UC Davis.

SOFTBALL

Santiago Canyon 11, Orange Coast 3

ORANGE – Mariah Dominguez was three for three with one run batted in and one run for the visiting Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Monday.

Kellie Tiner was one for two with two RBIs for OCC
