Newport Harbor High senior Christina O’Beck has committed to the University of Michigan for women’s water polo, she said Friday.

O’Beck was the leading scorer this past winter for the Sailors. The team’s primary center, she had 66 goals, helping Newport Harbor (23-8) advance to the CIF Southern Section Division 1 title match for the third straight year.

O’Beck said she liked the Michigan campus when she went there for a tournament in seventh grade, as well as last year for the school’s “Junior Day.”

“I’ve always wanted to leave California and get out of this bubble of Newport Beach,” O’Beck said. “I’ve never been where there’s snow. It’ll be interesting and fun.”

O’Beck is the second Newport-Mesa senior to commit to the Wolverines this year, joining CdM senior defender Annie Mortimer. O’Beck said she and Mortimer have become friends and plan to play club together this summer for the CdM Aquatics Grey team.

Michigan also features 2012 Newport Harbor graduate Presley Pender, a sophomore who currently leads the Wolverines (19-12) in goals and assists.
