High School Roundup: CdM boys’ volleyball falls in TOC final

Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions

SANTA BARBARA — Corona del Mar High finished second in the tournament after losing to Los Angeles Loyola in the title match.

Loyola won, 25-23, 25-23, 25-16.

Will Hunter and Kevin Fults had nine killls each, while Augie Miller and Sam Kobrine added six kills each for CdM (17-5).

The Sea Kings reached the final after beating Manhattan Beach Mira Costa in the semifinals, 25-16, 25-16, 21-25, 25-20

Miller led CdM with 16 kills, while Ryan Moss and Kobrine had 10 kills each. Hunter went for six kills, three solo blocks and nine block assists, Kevin Fults had seven kills and Matt Ctrvtlik amassed 45 assists.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Corona del Mar 13, El Toro 2

Senior attacker Max Kline finished with four goals and four assists for the host Sea Kings, who improved to 12-0 on Saturday.

Nino Chavez, Jordan Greenhall, Sherwin Gersten and Noah Howe each had two goals apiece for CdM, ranked No. 2 in California on laxpower.com.

Jason Simaan won nine faceoffs for the Sea Kings, while goalie Hoyt Crance made six saves.

Brian Leguay had six ground balls.

The Sea Kings play at JSerra on Monday at 6 p.m.

Newport Harbor 13, Edison 6

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Senior attacker John Mooers recorded five goals, helping the visiting Sailors stay undefeated in Sunset League play on Friday.

Joe Fuller had three goals and three assists for Newport Harbor (7-6, 4-0 in league).

PJ Steiner won 11 of 16 faceoffs for the Sailors.

Liam Whelan finished with four takeaways and three ground balls, while Blake Lenk had three takeaways and three ground balls.

Newport Harbor plays at Marina on Monday at 7 p.m.

GIRLS’ TRACK & FIELD

Mt. SAC Relays

WALNUT — Hope Bender lowered her school record in the 100 hurdles, winning the seeded division in 14.69 seconds. Teammate Emma Kratzberg took third in 14.79, which makes her the second fastest hurdler in NHHS history.

The 4x400 relay team of Paige Fults, Kratzberg, Lauren Loucks and Hope Bender took third in the seeded division in 4:59.13.
