College Roundup: OCC dominates Desert

Alec Friedman went three for three with three runs batted in as part of the Pirates’ 14-hit attack in a nonconference game Friday at OCC.

Cody Bruder (two runs, one RBI), Justin Broussard (two runs, one RBI), Jake Thumm (two runs, one RBI), Tommy Bell (two runs, one RBI), and Cody Maples had two hits each, while Chris Iriart and Greg Espinosa produced two RBIs each for OCC (25-9).

Desert is 6-26.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

UC Irvine 13, Loyola Marymount 4

Goalie Jillian Yocum made six saves, including a penalty shot, as the No. 6-ranked Anteaters closed out the regular season at home on Friday.

Jessy Cardey finished with two goals for UCI (22-7, 5-0 in Big West Conference), which opens Big West Conference Tournament play at Long Beach State on April 25.

The Anteaters will start in the semifinals at 1:30 p.m. and face the winner of the preliminary round match between Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Mt. SAC Relays

WALNUT — UC Irvine senior Lacey Surak recorded a career-best mark in the javelin throw at the 56th annual Mt. SAC Relays Friday.

Surak had a best throw of 158-6, over nine feet better than her previous best as she improved her No. 2 mark in UCI history.

Itos Aikhionbare placed third in the shotput with a mark of 50-2 Friday in Walnut.

Kaulyn Lee-McNeill finished 25th overall of 57 competitors in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 61.72 and Paige Bushnell was 42nd in 62.23.

Megan George placed 26th overall in a field of 63 in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.24, Megan Benson was 35th in 14.42 and Bushnell 42nd in 14.54.

Chelsea Schneider won her section of the 800 meters with a time of 2:13.52, which was 69th overall of 103 runners.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Mt. SAC Relays

WALNUT — Senior Stephen Brown finished eighth in the pole vault to lead UC Irvine at the 56th Mt. SAC Relays Friday.

Brown cleared a height of 15-11 in the event.

Mason Miller finished 11th of 24 competitors in the shot put with a mark of 56-0 and James Douglas was 25th of 53 in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.61.

Brandon Howard led the ‘Eaters in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing 37th overall of 60 in 54.04.
