College Roundup: OCC men’s volleyball advances to state semifinals

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Orange Coast def. Long Beach City

Adrian Faitalia finished with 28 kills, leading the host Pirates to the semifinals of the California Community College Athletic Assn. playoffs with a 25-19, 25-18, 22-25, 25-16 win against Long Beach City on Friday.

The Pirates (16-5) play Santa Monica City (16-2) at San Diego City on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. The two schools met in last year’s state championship, which OCC won.

OCC’s Nick Amado recorded 17 kills with no errors, and added seven blocks.

Alec Podrasky had 17 digs, while Steven Duhoux, a Newport Harbor High product, amassed 57 assists.

MEN’S TENNIS

Vanguard 5, San Diego Christian 1

INDIAN WELLS — The Lions cruised to their third straight Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament title with an easy final triumph Friday at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Junior No. 1 singles player Stefan Kilchhofer posted a 6-0, 6-2 win, while the Lions’ Roger Muri (6-1, 6-3 at No. 3) and Michael Rjazanov (6-1, 6-1 at No. 4) also posted singles wins in matches that were completed.

Klichhofer and Muri posted an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles and Filip Burnac and Daymon Johnson won at No. 3 doubles, 8-5, for the Lions.

No. 3-ranked Vanguard improves to 25-0. After a nonconference match at Claremont-Mudd on Tuesday, Coach Mattias Johansson’s Lions, whose program will be discontinued after this season, will venture to the NAIA Tournament, May 12-16, at Mobile, Ala.

No. 9-ranked San Diego Christian is 14-7.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Mt. SAC Relays

WALNUT — Senior Mason Miller broke the UC Irvine record in the shot put that had stood for 38 years on Friday.

Miller registered a mark of 58-5 1/4, breaking the previous school mark of 58-4 1/4 set by Kris Lettow in 1977.

Miller finished fifth in the event, which was won by USC’s Nicholas Ponzio at 63-2 1/4.

In other action at Mt. SAC’s Hilmer Lodge Stadium Friday, UCI’s Brandon Howard placed 28th overall in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.20.

Kyle Hubbard finished 31st overall in the 110-meter hurdles in 14.93 and Cameron Vaca was 33rd with a time of 15.02.

At the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, sophomore Isaiah Thompson placed 12th of 119 competitors overall in the 800 meters with a time of 1:52.30 and Julian Lujan finished 70th in 1:57.99.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING

Orange Empire Conference Championships

MISSION VIEJO — Alexa Clayfield won the 400-yard individual medley and contributed to a winning relay to help Orange Coast College widen its lead on the second day of the three-day meet at Saddleback College on Friday.

Clayfield’s time in the 400 IM was 4 minutes, 42.06 seconds. She anchored the winning 800 freestyle relay that included Nacinda Paap, Rebecca Aguilar and Chloe Kim (7:51.07).

Aguilar (57.97 in the 100 butterfly) and Valerie Acosta (1:11.29 in the 100 breaststroke) posted second-place finishes and both were joined by Kessy Hickey and Audrey Hung on the second-place 200 medley relay (1:51.29).

OCC’s Candis Buck was second in the three-meter diving final.

Kim was third in the 100 fly (1:00.10), followed by teammates Lexi Hill (fourth in 1:01.19) and Ashley Demont (fifth in 1:01.72).

Hickey was fourth in the 200 free (2:04.78) and Hung was fourth in the 100 backstroke (1:05.50) for the Pirates, whose 526.5 team points are well ahead of second-place Golden West (406).

MEN’S SWIMMING

Orange Empire Conference Championships

MISSION VIEJO — Tyler Connors and Alexander Cargill posted third-place finishes to pace Orange Coast College in the second day of the three-day event Friday at Saddleback College.

Connors (53.26 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke) and Cargill (59.93 in the 100 breaststroke) also joined Derek Price and Alex Furlong to help OCC finish second in the 200 medley relay (1 minute, 36.80 seconds).

Kyle Bogel (4:22.08 in the 400 individual medley) and Jacob Outsen (1:01.34 in the 100 breaststroke) were fourth and fifth, respectively.

OCC’s 419.5 team points ranked third, behind Golden West (547.5) and Riverside (467.5), heading into the final day on Saturday.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Mt. SAC Relays

WALNUT — Sophomore Megan George had UC Irvine’s top finish on Friday.

George posted a time of 13.92 in the 100-meter hurdles to place 20th overall in the event at Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut.

Kaulyn Lee-McNeill finished 22nd in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 61.36 and Persis William-Mensah (Estancia) was third in her heat and 29th overall in the 100 meters in 11.84, tying her No. 3 mark in Anteater history.

Simone Buchanan finished 58th overall in the 400 meters in 57.91.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Concordia 5, Vanguard 2

INDIAN WELLS — Sophomores Ashley Wao-Udin and Brooke Ferslov-Jensen earned singles victories for the Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament final on Friday at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Wao-Udin posted a 7-6, 6-3 triumph at the No. 2 spot and Ferslov-Jensen defeated her No. 4 rival, 6-1, 6-3.

No. 19-ranked Vanguard fell to 8-16 and will need an at-large berth to compete in the NAIA Tournament, May 12-16, at Mobile, Ala.

No. 14-ranked Concordia (12-11) claimed the program’s first GSAC crown and the automatic berth into the NAIA Tournament.

BASEBALL

Concordia 10, Vanguard 6

IRVINE — Jose Reyes went four for four with two runs batted in and Taylor McKnight was three for four with four RBIs for the visiting Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Friday.

Brandon Sandoval was three for five with a run and a stolen base for Vanguard (32-14, 25-12 in conference).

No. 19-ranked Concordia is 38-11, 27-10.

The two teams conclude the series with a doubleheader Saturday, beginning at noon.

Golden West 14, Orange Coast 10

Jack Kruger went five for seven with two runs batted in and two doubles for the host Pirates in an Orange Empire Conference game that went 12 innings on Friday.

Golden West (21-13, 13-6 in conference) scored four runs in the top of the 12th to win it.

Stefan Panayiotou went two for three with a two-run home run for OCC (20-14, 11-8).

WOMEN’S SAND VOLLEYBALL

IRVINE — The Pirates split their two Orange Empire Conference matches on the road Friday, beating Santa Ana, 4-1, before losing to Irvine Valley, 5-0.

The doubleheader, which closed out the regular season for OCC (7-3, 2-2 in conference), took place at Irvine Valley.

Danielle Boyette and Sierra Brown swept their Santa Ana counterparts, 21-18, 21-14.

The Pirates open the Orange Empire Conference individual championships at Irvine Valley on Wednesday at noon.
