College Roundup: Vanguard sweeps APU

Doubleheader

Host Vanguard University swept two nonconference games Wednesday, topping Azusa Pacific, 8-0, in the first game and 3-2 in the second.

Breanne Gomez was two for two with three runs batted in, while Brittany Colenzo was two for three with three RBIs in the opener.

Rachel Stalford pitched a five-inning complete-game shutout, allowing five hits, walking one and striking out six.

In the second game, Shelby Kuryllo was two for three and Gomez had the lone RBI to help Shelby Ross (5-1) earn the win with two shutout innings of one-hit relief.

Vanguard is now 32-20.

APU is 37-17.

MEN’S TENNIS

Doubleheader

UC Irvine split a pair of matches on Wednesday, trouncing Big West Conference visitor UC Riverside, 7-0, after falling to nonconference foe Loyola Marymount, 5-2, earlier at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

The Anteaters are now 11-15, 1-3 in conference.

Shuhei Shibuhara won 12 of 14 sets in the No. 5 spot to highlight a singles sweep against UC Riverside (2-21, 0-5). Shibuhara also teamed with Rafael Davidian for a win at No. 2 doubles.

Against LMU (14-9), Davidian and Jonathan Poon posted singles victories in the No. 4 and No. 6 spot, respectively.
