Before the Corona del Mar High boys’ lacrosse team, ranked No. 2 in California by laxpower.com, traveled to play out of town on Wednesday, the school honored three of the Sea Kings’ top players.

Hugh Crance, his twin brother Hoyt Crance, and Brett Greenlee were three of many local senior athletes recognized on the first day of the final signing period of the year in sports outside of football, soccer and men’s water polo. Hugh signed a national letter of intent with the University of Notre Dame men’s lacrosse program, Greenlee with Denver’s, and Hoyt committed to Yale.

The three play defense for CdM, Hugh as a defender, Hoyt as a goalie, and Greenlee as a long-stick midfielder. Going into the Sea Kings’ contest at Carlsbad La Costa Canyon, CdM was 10-0 and it had allowed only 18 goals.

Other CdM athletes moving on to play in college are Kaybree Albright (Indiana women’s water polo), Eliza Britt (Princeton women’s water polo), Katie Craig (Colorado State women’s volleyball), Kevin Fults (UC Santa Barbara (men’s volleyball), Paige Migliori (Pepperdine women’s volleyball), Augie Miller (Pepperdine men’s volleyball), Elin Wolker (Boston women’s cross-country and track and field) and Kira Woods (Yale women’s sailing).

Newport Harbor’s signing party featured two standout girls’ track and field athletes, Erin Barth and Hope Bender, who are headed to Texas Christian University and UC Santa Barbara, respectively. Liam Ogburn is bound for Cal Lutheran to play baseball and Katya Farinsky to Lewis and Clark for women’s crew.

Three CdM athletes who were also honored were Nigel Bress (Chapman men’s water polo), Shelby Brown (Southern Methodist University women’s soccer) and Garrett Spruth (Pepperdine men’s water polo), even though the spring signing period excludes men’s water polo and women’s soccer. The signing period for those sports, including football, was in February.

The Sailors’ event included Jack Mooers and Charlie Padden, both are going to UC Santa Barbara for men’s water polo, and Keaton Cablay, a future Cal Lutheran football player.

Mater Dei held a ceremony for three players who live in Newport-Mesa. The biggest name of the three was Jonathan Klinsmann, the son of Jurgen Klinsmann, the soccer coach of the U.S. men’s national team. The younger Klinsmann is headed to play goalkeeper for the UC Berkeley men’s soccer team.

Bridget Shoenberger, a Costa Mesa resident, is off to Gonzaga for women’s crew, while Newport Coast’s Alyse Wallace-Ford is bound to play women’s volleyball at USC.
