High School Roundup: Newport Harbor’s Vetrovec strikes out 15 in loss

BASEBALL

Oak Hills 1, Newport Harbor 0

Shaun Vetrovec delivered a gem but finished as the hard-luck loser in the Sailors’ Beach Pit Classic game Tuesday at Newport Harbor.

Vetrovec, bound for UC Irvine, struck out 15, walked one and allowed four hits in his complete-game effort. Vetrovec, Connor Seabold, Chris McCann and Jonah Dipoto each had a hit for Newport Harbor (9-8).

Sergio Bates made the game a pitchers’ duel, as he struck out nine and walked none in his four-hit, complete-game shutout for Oak Hills. He hit one batter.

The Sailors close out play in the eight-team, round-robin tournament against Canyon Wednesday at 3:15 p.m.

Corona del Mar 11, Village Christian 5

The Sea Kings earned their second straight win in the Beach Pit Classic with seven hits and no errors Tuesday at CdM.

Sam Younesi (one for two, two RBIs, double), Nolan McCarthy (two for three, three RBIs), Evan Larsen (RBI) and Brett Olson (double) contributed to help CdM (5-12) rally from a 5-1 deficit. The Sea Kings scored three runs in the fourth ining, three in the fifth and fourth in the sixth.

Justin Hess picked up his first varsity career win in relief.

Blake Schneekluth earned his second save of the season with two shutout innings.

CdM closes out play in the Beach Pit Classic with a home game agaisnt Oak Hills Wednesday at 3:15 p.m.

Sage Hill 15, Calvary Chapel Downey 4

Parker Reposa improved to 5-0 after pitching six innings and giving up two earned runs in the Lightning’s Academy League win Tuesday.

Kellen Ochi (double, two RBIs) and Brian Slaughter both went three for four

Reposa went two for three with a double and three RBIs, Harrison Rhee was two for four with two RBIs and Toby Bush went two for three for Sage Hill (9-3, 4-1 in Academy League), which had 15 hits.

The two teams square off again Thursday at Sage Hill at 3:15 p.m.

Beckman 7, Estancia 1

Jacob Mullison gave up one earned run in 6 1/3 innings and struck out six for the Eagles in the Beach Pit Classic game Tuesday at Estancia.

Jackson Letterman (one for three), Connor Brown (one for three, double and a run scored), Aaron Boaitey (one for three) and Cody Nelson (two for three) played well for Estancia, which plays host to Irvine to close out Beach Pit Classic play Wednesday at 3:15 p.m.

Village Christian 6, Newport Harbor 3

Jonah Dipoto was two for two and also pitched two scoreless innings for Newport Harbor in a Beach Pitch Classic game Monday.

Jeremiah Sheldon pitched two scoreless innings with two strikeouts for the Sailors.

Connor Seabold, Shaun Vetrovec (RBI), Logan Mahaffy, Rigsby Duncan (double) and Chris McCann (double, two RBIs) had one hit each for Newport Harbor.

Newport Harbor 3, Irvine 2

Liam Ogburn pitched 6 2/3 innings, earning the win and helping the host Sailors open the Beach Pit Classic on the right track on Saturday.

Ogburn, who didn’t allow an earned run, struck out three and improved to 1-2.

Jonah Dipoto recorded the last out and got the save for Newport Harbor. Dipoto also singled in a run.

Shaun Vetrovec brought in two runs and singled, while Jake Genova went two for three.

Sean Korkmaz went for one for three with a double.

The Sailors resume tournament play at home against Sun Valley Village Christian on Monday at 3:15 p.m.

Canyon 9, Corona del Mar 5

Austin Smith went three for four with a run batted for the Sea Kings in their opener of the Beach Pit Classic Saturday.

Nick Premer was one for three with two RBIs, while Kevin McCarthy, Brett Olson, Jake Hastings (RBI) and Nolan McCarthy had hits for CdM, which plays host to Estancia Monday at 3: 15 p.m.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Corona del Mar 8, JSerra 5

The Sea Kings, ranked No. 3 in Southern California by laxpower.com, outscored No. 2-ranked JSerra, 5-0, down the stretch to earn the big win Tuesday.

Junior Nino Chavez led CdM (10-1) with three goals and three groundballs, while Ben Palitz led the Sea Kings with four assists. Stephen Von Der Ahe added two goals. Brian Leguay forced three turnovers, while Hoyt Crance made 12 saves for the Sea Kings.

BOYS’ GOLF

Corona del Mar 183, San Clemente 189

Chase Furey shot even-par 34 to share medalist honors for the Sea Kings in the nonleague match Tuesday at Newport Beach Country Club.

Drew Hanson, Haley Furey and Garrett Wayne each shot 37, while Ian Fletcher shot 38 for CdM.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Clash of the Titans

Honolulu, Hawaii — Corona del Mar High swept host Punahou Friday and Kamehameha Saturday.

The Sea Kings (17-2) scored a 27-25, 27-25, 25-19 victory over Punahou. Ryan Moss (15 kills), Joey Martino (11 kills, three digs, one block), Kevin Fults (11 kills), Augie Miller (nine kills), Tommy Brooks (seven kills), Tommy Casey (10 digs) and Matt Ctvrtlik (45 assists, 10 digs) contributed to the win.

CdM earned a 25-17, 25-23, 25-23 win Saturday. Martino (15 kills), Moss (13 kills), Brooks (eight kills), Casey (12 digs) and Ctvrtlik (37 asssists, seven digs) were a part of the win, while Brett Shisler provided solid defense.

TRACK & FIELD

Corona del Mar

Matt Hurst won the 400 meters in 48.30 seconds in the open division at the Arcadia Invitational Saturday.

Spencer Keith finished fifth in (9:25.26) in the 3,200.

Lilly Schmidt took first in the 1,600 in 5:09.37 at the Irvine Distance Carnival invitational division, and Racquel Powers was first in the frosh-soph 1,600 in 5:20.30.

Newport Harbor

Lauren Loucks won the frosh-soph 800 meters in 2:26.51 at the Irvine Distance Carnival.

Ben Wilson won the boys’ invitational 1,600 meters in 4:36.26.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Palm Desert 14, Corona del Mar 4

PALM DESERT — Bjorn Hoffmann and Ryan Andrews each won twice in singles in Tuesday’s nonleague road match.

CdM is ranked No. 3 in CIF Southern Section Division 1; Palm Desert is No. 2 in Division 2.

The Sea Kings (11-3) play host to Dana Hills on Wednesday.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Costa Mesa 87, Katella 84

Raymond Andrade won the 200-yard freestyle and 50 free for the Mustangs in Monday’s nonleague meet at home.

Andrade touched in 1:58.08 to win the 200 and 24.30 seconds to win the 50. Tyler Connors also was a double winner, in the 200 individual medley (2:05.05) and 100 backstroke (56.13).

Corbin Fisher won the 500 free (5:58.01) and Nick Ly won the 100 breaststroke (1:17.02) for Mesa. Jacob Peterson, Fisher, Andrade and Connors also captured the 400 free relay, in 3:42.03.

Also, on Saturday, Connors finished third out of 35 swimmers at the Cypress Pentathlon. He won the 100 backstroke and 200 IM, finishing in an overall time of 5:58.38. The other races in the pentathlon were the 100 butterfly, 100 breaststroke and 100 freestyle.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Costa Mesa 74, Katella 64

Lauren Smith won the 200-yard freestyle and 100 free for Mesa in the nonleague meet Monday at home.

Smith’s times were 2:10.34 in the 200 free, and 58.02 seconds in the 50 free. Yesennia Villa won the 500 free (6:20.51) and was second in the 200 free (2:23.19).

Devon Christensen won the 50 free (29.87), while Bridgette Smitheram won the 100 backstroke (1:11.97) and was second in the 100 free (1:04.31).

Hayley Petersen won the 200 IM for Costa Mesa in 2:52.44.
