College Roundup: OCC outright PCC champ

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Orange Coast def. San Diego Mesa

SAN DIEGO — Jimmy Webb had 14 kills and three blocks as the Pacific Coast Conference champion Pirates wrapped up conference play Friday night with a 25-14, 25-18, 25-18 win on the road.

Trevor Burr had three service aces and seven digs for OCC (18-1, 11-1 in conference), which has earned a first-round bye in the state playoffs.

OCC will play either Irvine Valley College or Long Beach City College in a state semifinal April 23 at 7 p.m., at Santiago Canyon College.

BASEBALL

Orange Coast 10, Fullerton 1

Sophomore first baseman Chris Iriart slugged his state-leading eighth home run, Cody Bruder drove in three runs and three pitchers combined to help the host Pirates prevail in the Orange Empire Conference game Friday.

With the win, OCC (24-9, 12-7 in conference) moves into a first-place tie with Santa Ana with two conference games remaining. The Pirates, who topped Fullerton, 5-0 on Thursday, are one game ahead of Saddleback, Cypress and Riverside.

OCC plays Friday at home against College of the Desert, then closes out conference play against seventh-place Golden West (Tuesday at home and Thursday in Huntington Beach).

Fullerton is 19-13, 9-10.

UC Irvine 7, Cal State Northridge 5

Senior Andrew Morales’ scoreless inning streak ended at 31 2/3 innings, but the right-hander struck out nine and improved to 7-0 in a Big West Conference game at Anteater Ballpark on Friday.

Morales held the Matadors scoreless for the first six innings, before allowing a run with one out in the sixth. During his seven-inning outing, Morales did not walk a batter and gave up two runs on five hits, his first runs he has allowed at home this season.

Jerry McClanahan drove in two runs with a hit, giving UCI (22-11, 6-1 in conference) a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning.

Connor Spencer, who went two for four, brought in two runs with a triple in the fifth. The Anteaters scored four in the inning to take a 6-0 lead.

The Matadors (13-20, 2-5) rallied for five runs in two of the last three innings, before Sam Moore picked up his 14th save of the season.

The Anteaters resume the series against the Matadors at home on Saturday at 1 p.m.

San Diego Christian 7, Vanguard 4

EL CAJON — John Schwer was three for four with one run batted in to lead the visiting Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Friday.

Three Vanguard errors led to a pair of unearned runs as the No. 6-ranked Hawks opened a 7-0 lead through five innings.

Nick Rodda and Thomas Mobley had two hits apiece for the No. 14-ranked Lions (25-15, 17-11 in conference) fell three games behind the GSAC-leading hosts (33-12, 20-8) with eight conference games remaining.

Starting pitcher Scott Torrey took the loss for Vanguard, only his second in nine decisions this season.

MEN’S TENNIS

Boise State 5, UC Irvine 2

BOISE — Caryl Hernandez and Tyler Pham posted the lone singles wins for the visting Anteaters in the nonconference match Friday.

Pham posted a 6-4, 6-3 win in the No. 2 spot, while Hernandez outlasted his No. 5 opponent, 2-6, 6-4, (10-8).

UCI is 9-14.

The No. 22-ranked Broncos, guided by former UCI Coach Greg Patton, are 21-4.

Vanguard 9, Biola 0

The No. 4-ranked Lions clinched their second straight Golden State Athletic Conference regular-season title during a home match on Wednesday.

Miguel Saiz Perez and Justin Seller, playing No. 2 and No. 6 singles, won every point for Vanguard (14-4, 9-0 in conference).

Saiz Perez teamed up with Daymon Johnson in No. 2 doubles and just dropped one game.

Vanguard closes out conference play against Concordia at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center on Saturday at 11 a.m.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Vanguard 8, Biola 1

The No. 9-ranked Lions improved to 9-0 in Golden State Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, earning them the regular-season title at home.

No. 1 singles player Juliet Labarthe swept her two sets for Vanguard (13-7 overall).

Labarthe and Michelle Sullivan won in No. 1 doubles.

Vanguard looks to close out conference play undefeated on Saturday, when it faces Concordia at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center at 11 a.m.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

Host Vanguard University swept visiting Antelope Valley in a nonconference doubleheader Friday, winning 9-0 in five innings before taking the nightcap 9-2.

In the first game, Rachel Stalford threw a five-inning shutout, allowing four hits and striking out five.

First baseman Brittney Boggs hit a grand slam to highlight a nine-run fifth for the hosts, for whom Taylor Wilson, Brittany Colenzo and Summer Penner had two hits apiece.

Shortstop Haley Croce led the Lions (27-19) in the second game, going three for four with two runs batted in. Taylor Hallahan and Boggs also had three his for the winners, who scored six runs in the third inning. Alexandra Olvera got the victory, allowing two runs and seven hits in five innings to improve to 4-4.
