College Roundup: UCI men’s volleyball takes down UCLA

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. UCLA

Zack La Cavera recorded 20 kills to lead the No. 4-ranked Anteaters to a 25-19, 21-25, 25-21, 25-20 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation win Friday night.

Travis Woloson had 13 kills and Tamir Hershko added 12 kills for UCI (24-4, 18-3 in the MPSF), which won its sixth straight match.

Roberto Frazzoni amassed 50 assists for the Anteaters.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

UC Irvine 4, Fresno State 3

The ‘Eaters (13-7) cranked out a pivotal doubles point thanks to seniors Ali Facey and Kat Facey taking down the Sherif Ahmed sisters, 7-5, at No. 1 Friday.

UCI finishes its home season with an 8-6 mark, and will carry its 4-0 road record into Cal State Northridge on Sunday for a 1 p.m. match and a chance to keep its Big West title hopes alive.

No. 39-ranked Fresno State is 15-4.

BASEBALL

Vanguard 7, Westmont 3

Jose Rojas went two for four with two runs batted in and one run scored for the Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Friday.

Paul Keating and Brett Collins added one RBI each for Vanguard (31-12, 24-10 in conference).

Westmont is 31-9, 25-8.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Big West Challenge

FULLERTON —- UC Irvine earned four first-place finishes Friday night.

Ariel Cheng won the pole vault with a mark of 12-0 ½, Rebecka Miranda captured first in the triple jump at 38-4 ¾ (No. 7 in UCI history), Marisa McGinnis was first in the javelin throw at 140-4 (No. 7 in Anteater history) and Megan George finished first in the 100-meter hurdles in 13.83.

Persis William-Mensah’s second-place time of 11.84 in the 100 meters ranks third in the UCI record book and the 4x100 relay of Taisyn Crutchfield, George, Tyra Jones and William-Mensah also placed second in 46.75 at the Titan Track Complex.

Lauren Ellison finished third in the triple jump at 36-10 ½ and Danika Hitchcock was sixth at 36-2.

Lily Trinh was fourth in the 400-meter hurdles in 63.60 and Jones sixth in 64.43. Jones also finished sixth in the 100 hurdles in 14.85.

Madelyn Sando placed sixth in the jump with a height of 4-11.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Big West Challenge

FULLERTON —- Sophomore Lloyd Sicard led UC Irvine with a first-place finish Friday night.

Sicard won the 110-meter hurdles in 13.92 at the Titan Track Complex in the 23rd annual competition between UCI, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara.

Mason Miller finished second in the shot put with a mark of 55-2 ¼ and he was fifth in the discus throw (153-3). Mike Graf recorded a second-place finish in the long jump at 22-9 ¼.

Matt Dispenza placed third in the high jump at a height of 6-4 ¾ and he was seventh in the triple jump at 42-9 ¾.

Kyle Hubbard finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles in 54.35 and Alex Tebbe was fifth in the 1500 meters with a time of 3:56.77 and Riley Martin sixth in 3:59.40.

In the 3,000 meters, Blake Wanser placed fourth in 8:36.65, Izzak Mireles was fifth in 8:37.60 and Nolan Del Valle sixth in 8:39.50.

Kolton Cody had a sixth-place finish of 11.04 in the 100 meters, Brandon Howard was sixth in the 200 meters (22.51) and Tommy Newton-Neal sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:36.0).
