Local teams win CIF academic awards

The Corona del Mar High football team, the defending CIF State Division III Bowl Game champion, won a CIF Southern Section Academic Award by having a cumulative 3.35 grade-point average, and the Newport Harbor girls’ cross-country team won as well in its sport with a 3.89 GPA.

The Back Bay programs have the highest GPAs for schools with an enrollments above 1,500 students.

The CdM girls’ track and field team finished second in its sport with a 3.66 GPA, while boys’ soccer took fourth (3.43 GPA).

Newport Harbor saw its boys’ cross-country and girls’ track and field teams each finish fourth with 3.65 and 3.61 respective GPAs.

Sage Hill, in schools with less than 1,499 students, placed second in baseball (3.58), fourth in girls’ golf (3.67), fourth in girls’ soccer (3.71), fifth in boys’ soccer (3.55), and fifth in boys’ water polo (3.54).

The Costa Mesa boys’ golf team was fourth (3.67).

The winners will be honored in a pre-game ceremony before the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim play host to the Cleveland Indians on April 29.
