UC Irvine 15, Hawaii 8

HONOLULU — Justin Castro went three for five with three runs batted in, Connor Spencer was two for five with four RBIs and Kris Paulino was two for four with three RBIs and a home run to help the visiting Anteaters sweep the Big West Conference series on Sunday.

The 15 runs were a season-best for the Anteaters (21-10, 5-1 in conference), who are tied atop the Big West with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Chris Rabago and Jonathan Munoz had two hits apiece for UCI, for which Evan Brock pitched into the sixth inning to collect the win, his fifth in seven decisions.

Late Saturday night, UCI scored a run in the seventh to break a 2-2 tie on its way to a 3-2 win over the Rainbow Warriors, who are now 14-16, 2-4.

A two-out single by Jerry McClanahan drove in Rabago for the game-winning run, which made a winner out of starting pitcher Elliot Surrey, who allowed two runs and four hits in seven innings. Surrey is now 4-2.

Sam Moore earned his 13th save with two perfect innings.

MEN’S GOLF

Wyoming Cowboy Classic

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — UCI junior Pete Fernandez tied for fourth to help the Anteaters finish seventh in the 21-team event completed Tuesday at Talking Stick Golf Club.

Fernandez shot four-under-par 206 over 54 holes to lead the ‘Eaters, whose team score (859) was 28 shot behind victorious Oklahoma.

Freshman Ryan O’Connor was 35th at 216 for UCI’s other top-70 finisher.

Orange Empire Conference meet

On Monday at Riverside’s home match, held at Victoria Country Club, the Orange Coast (36-9 overall) dropped to second place, one win behind Santiago Canyon after a third-place team score of 384.

The Hawks (37-8) won the event with a 373, followed by Riverside (31-14) which shot a 374.

Marc Reyes led the Pirates by shooting an even-par 72. Michael Chen carded a 75. Jem Young (78), Zach Eddy (79), Theron Ornt (80) and Zach Olson (80) complete OCC’s scoring.

The final conference matchup will take place on April 16 at Green River (Irvine Valley host), beginning at 11 a.m. The OEC Championships will be on April 28 and May 5 at Los Serranos Golf Club.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

UC Irvine 4, UC Davis 1

DAVIS — Four singles victories propeled the visiting Anteaters in the Big West Conference match Sunday.

Marivick Mamiit (No. 2 singles), Franziska Goettsching (No. 3) and Kat Facey (No. 5) earned straight-set wins to help UCI (14-5, 6-0 in conference) win its 11th straight match.

Davis fell to 11-7, 3-3.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

USC 16, UC Irvine 5

LOS ANGELES — The No. 3-ranked Trojans snapped the visiting Anteaters’ seven-game winning streak in the nonconference contest on Sunday.

Senior Kaleigh Gilchrist, a Newport Harbor High product, scored two goals for the Trojans (21-1), while USC freshman Ioanna Harlabidis had one goal for the winners.

UCI is 18-7.
