All-League Girls’ Basketball: Bruening on first team

Corona del Mar High sophomore Natalia Bruening has earned first-team All-Pacific Coast League status for the recently completed girls’ basketball season.

Bruening, a 6-foot-3 forward, produced team-best averages of 14.5 points, 12 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game for the Sea Kings, helping them finish third in the league. CdM’s 6-4 league record was the Sea Kings’ best in Coach Mark Decker’s eight-year tenure.

Six-foot-two sophomore center Krista Anderson, who averaged 12 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks per game, was a second-team all-league honoree for CdM.

Bruening and Anderson helped CdM (21-10) advance to the CIF Southern Section Division 3AA semifinals, the Sea Kings’ longest postseason run in 31 years, before falling at Lake Elsinore Lakeside. CdM also advanced to the CIF State playoffs for the first time in program history, falling in the opening round of the Southern California Regional Division III playoffs to Los Angeles Garfield.

University High senior point guard Emily Reiland, who helped the Trojans win the PCL title, earned league MVP honors.

Lopez earns honor

Newport Harbor High senior guard Jennifer Lopez is a first-team All-Sunset League selection in girls’ basketball.

Lopez, a team captain, averaged a team-best 10.5 points per game for the Sailors, and her 6.2 rebounds per game were second on the Sailors. She also led Newport in steals, with 2.6 per game.

Senior point guard Bela Raimondi was a second-team all-league selection. Raimondi was second on the Sailors with 7.2 points per game.

Newport Harbor finished 7-16, 0-10 in league, in Coach Shelly VanDusen’s first year at the helm.

Paola Roa and Stephanie Louie of league champion Huntington Beach shared the league MVP award.

Alvarez on second team

Sage Hill School junior guard Elizabeth Alvarez has earned second-team All-Academy League honors in girls’ basketball.

Alvarez was a leader for the Lightning, who finished 6-17 and 2-8 in league. Sage Hill finished fifth in the six-team league.

Sage junior forward Bailey Super, a team captain, was a honorable mention selection.

Rachel Nagel of league champion Whitney, which finished 10-0 in league, was Academy League MVP.
