College Roundup: Vanguard edges Westmont

Vanguard 3, Westmont 2 (11 innings)

Freshman Brandon Sandoval singled, stole second, advanced to third and scored the winning run on a Taylor McKnight groundout for the No. 25-ranked Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Friday.

Sandoval led the seven-hit attack for the Lions (25-12, 16-9 in conference), going two for five.

Marshall McKinnon (3-1) pitched two hitless innings to earn the win in relief of starter Scott Torrey, who allowed eight hits and two runs in nine innings.

Westmont is 29-11, 17-11.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. UC San Diego

LA JOLLA — Senior outside hitter Jeremy Dejno had a match-high 20 kills to lead the No. 7-ranked Anteaters to a 25-20, 22-25, 25-18, 25-13 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation road victory Friday.

Dejno hit .633 with just one error in 30 attempts to help UCI improve to 17-9, 14-8 in conference).

Outside hitter Connor Hughes had 12 kills and hit .476, while middle blocker Colin Mehring hit .643 with 10 kills and three block assists.

Middle blocker Scott Kevorken had seven kills and a team-best four block assists, setter Daniel Stork had 68 assists and libero Michael Brinkley chipped in a team-best 10 digs.

UCSD fell to 2-22, 1-21.

UCI completes conference play at home against Stanford (Friday) and Pacific (Saturday) at the Bren Events Center.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Coast Classic Invitational

The Orange Coast College men, led by individual winners Luis Morales, Brawley Osborne and Demauria Stewart, were tops among 10 teams on Friday at OCC.

Morales topped the field in the 1,500 meters (3 minutes, 54.16 seconds) and the 5,000 in 15:08.51, Osborne won the hammer throw (45.17 meters) and Stewart won the 100 in 11.20 seconds.

Vanguard University’s Josh Espinoza was second in the 1,500 in 3:56.13 and third in the 800 in 1:55.39 to pace the Lions, who were 10th with 20 team points.

OCC’s team total was 168, more than 48 better than runner-up El Camino.

Osborne was second in the shot put (12.25 meters), while OCC’s Scott DeCou was second in the discus (41.39).

OCC’s Bryson Crawford was second in the long jump (6.86 meters) and the 400 hurdles (56.79 seconds).

OCC’s Brandon Ferguson was second in the 5,000 in 15:15.37 and teammate Lucio Ramirez was third (15:19.92).

OCC’s Wyatt Dobrick was third in the high jump (1.80 meters) and the long jump (6.81)

Additional third-place finishes for OCC were posted by Connor Garcia (3,000 steeplechase in 10:00.76), Andrew Taylor in the pole vault (4.45 meters) and Chris Henderson in the triple jump (13.29).

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

LA JOLLA — UC Irvine junior Itos Aikhionbare finished second in the discus throw with a mark of 166 feet, 6 inches and junior Colleen Lillig was third in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17 minutes, 32.03 seconds to pace the Anteaters on the first day of the Cal/Nevada Championships at UC San Diego on Friday.

Carlotta Pham was fourth in the 10,000 in 37:40.75 and Lacey Surak was fifth in the javelin (144-8).

Freshman Megan George was the top qualifier in the prelims of the 100 hurdles (13.77) and Paige Bushnell also qualified for Saturday’s final in 14.43.

Ericka Nowell had the second-fastest time in the 400 hurdles prelims (1:00.34) and Kaulyn Lee-McNeill qualified fourth in 1:01.81 for UCI.

Chelsea Schneider (2:12.88) and Marie Brashears (2:14.18) advanced to Saturday’s 800 final.

UCI is second in the team competition with 28 points, 55 points behind San Diego State in the 19-team field.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Coast Classic Invitational

The Orange Coast College women finished second in the 10-team event held Friday at OCC.

Sophomore Leanne Allen won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11 minutes, 22.74 seconds as the lone individual winner for the Pirates.

Vanguard University’s Kapree Nelson won the 100 in 13.10 seconds, the 200 in 26.03 and anchored the winning 4x100 relay that included Jasmine Johnson, Joi Goynes and Ashley Ramsey.

Vanguard’s Diane Hudson won the hammer throw (39.56 meters) and the Lions’ Ashleigh Anderson won the javelin (36.04 meters).

OCC’s Ashley Tupailesa was second in the hammer throw (38.48) and third in the discus (32.27).

OCC’s Nikki Puerner was second in the 400 in 1:00.55, while Vanguard’s Marline Estell was second in the 1,500 in 4:43.30.

Karen Silvas (19:06.04), Guadalupe Cantoran (19:11.25) and Nisreen Ritz (19:18.42) were second, third and fourth, respectively, in the 5,000.

OCC’s Reanne Cortez was third in the 1,500 (4:44.60) and the Pirates’ Morgan Johnson was third in the hammer throw (36.51).

El Camino won the team title with 122 points, four more than OCC.

Vanguard finished fourth with 100 points.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD

LA JOLLA — UC Irvine juniors Alex Tebbe and Mason Miller scored points Friday on the first day of the Cal/Nevada Championships at UC San Diego.

Tebbe finished second in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14 minutes, 35.89 seconds and Miller was third in the shot put with a mark of 58 feet, 2 1/2 inches. The latter is the second-best mark in UCI history, behind only Kris Lettow (58-4 1/4 in 1977).

Senior James Douglass recorded a qualifying time of 14.25 in the 110 high hurdles and UCI freshman Lloyd Sicard (14.33) also advanced to Saturday’s final.

Sicard will also compete in the 400 hurdles final after qualifying in 53.80. Joining him in the final will be teammates Kyle Hubbard (54.59) and Duane Solomon (55.05).

Isaiah Thompson’s time of 1:53.71 was the second-fastest qualifying time in the 800 and Mike Kennedy advanced to the final in the 100 with a prelim time of 10.88.

The ‘Eaters are tied for third in the 17-team field with 15 points, 33 behind first-place Long Beach State.
