Duran named MVP

Estancia High senior guard Celia Duran was named Orange Coast League MVP in girls’ basketball.

Duran is joined on the first team by Eagles junior Slade Garnett and sophomore Maya Van Der Heever, while Costa Mesa senior Danielle Obong and junior Aubriona Mathis are also first-team selections.

Duran, who shared league MVP honors as a junior, averaged a team-best 16.7 points per game for league champion Estancia (24-4, 9-1 in league). She helped the Eagles win their third league title in her four varsity seasons. She also averaged 3.6 steals, 3.5 rebounds and three assists per game, while making 63 three-pointers. She was first-team all-league her final three seasons after earning second-team recognition as a freshman.

In her four-year career, Duran scored 1,613 points and made 212 three-pointers.

Van Den Heever, a point guard, was second on the team with 9.9 points per game. She dished out a team-best five assists to help the Eagles advance to the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3A playoffs. She is a repeat first-team honoree.

Garnett, a forward, averaged 8.5 points and a team-best 4.2 steals per contest.

Obong was the point guard for the Mustangs (14-12, 6-4 in league), who were third in league. She led Mesa with 15 points per game, and 2.8 steals. Obong, who plans to play at Orange Coast College, made 49 three-pointers.

Mathis, a junior forward, was second on the team with 9.2 points per game and pulled down a team-best 6.4 rebounds per contest.

The Mustangs lost in the first round of the CIF Southern Section 4AA playoffs.

Costa Mesa seniors Alexa Loredo and Jacqueline Guerrero were second-team all-league selections.

Damon stands out

Corona del Mar High senior center back Jay Damon was named Pacific Coast League Defensive MVP for leading the Sea Kings to an unbeaten league boys’ soccer title.

Damon’s presence allowed CdM (15-4-4, 8-0-2 in league) to claim its first outright league championship in Coach George Larsen’s five seasons in charge. The Sea Kings won their final seven league matches, four via shutout, and only gave up four goals in that span.

Senior forward John O’Connor, senior defensive midfielder Max Premer and senior midfielder Liam Stimpson each made the first team for the Sea Kings, who reached the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs. Corona del Mar lost at Anaheim, 2-1, in overtime.

O’Connor led the Sea Kings with 12 goals and seven assists.

Premer finished with seven goals and one assist.

Stimpson had two goals and five assists.

Corona del Mar senior forward Jake Kim and senior defender Daniel McCabe are second-team honorees.

University’s Mel McCurrie is the Offensive MVP.

Alcantara shines

Newport Harbor High junior midfielder Alan Alcantara was named the Sunset League’s Most Outstanding Offensive Player in boys’ soccer after he led the Sailors with 12 goals to go with five assists.

Also representing the Sailors on the first team were junior midfielder Jose Garfias, senior forward Jonny Arroyo and junior defensive midfielder David Mondragon. The trio was instrumental in the Sailors’ second straight third-place finish and second straight appearance in the the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.

Garfias totaled six goals and 10 assists.

Arroyo finished with six goals and six assists.

Mondragon had one goal and two assists.

Senior defenders David Ayala and Chas Beek, as well as sophomore goalkeeper Victor Negrete are second-team selections from Newport Harbor (8-9-4, 5-4-1 in league).

Edison’s Conner Gordon was league MVP.
