High School Roundup: Torres leads Estancia baseball to shutout

Estancia 4, Saddleback 0

Nick Torres pitched a complete-game, three-hit shutout with six strikeouts for the Eagles in the Orange Coast League game Thursday.

Jeff Alai (one for two with two runs batted in), Aaron Boaitey (two for three with an RBI) and Brian Rodriguez (one for two with an RBI) also contributed to the win for Estancia (4-7, 2-3 in league).

The Eagles play host to Lakewood to open the Beach Pit Classic Saturday at 2 p.m.

Fountain Valley 8, Newport Harbor 1

FOUNTAIN VALLEY – Jonah Dipoto pitched five innings for the Sailors in the Sunset League game Thursday.

Griffin Cribbs pitched one inning for Newport Harbor (6-7, 0-4 in league). Dipoto dropped to 1-3.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Newport Harbor 94, Marina 74

Freshman Melinda Stevens won the 200-yard individual medley and the 500 freestyle for the Sailors in Thursday’s Sunset League meet at Newport Harbor High.

Senior Kate Pipkin won the 200 free for the Sailors, who are 1-1 in league.

GIRLS’ TRACK & FIELD

Corona del Mar 70, Woodbridge 57

Jacqueline Choe was a double winner for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League meet Thursday.

Choe won the 1,600-meter run in 5 minutes, 19.6 seconds and the 3,200 in 11:38.2.

Kathryn Greenberg (31 feet, 11 inches in triple jump), Victoria Rihm (4-10 in high jump), Amanda Cooper (discus, 113-6) and Elizabeth Jones (shot put, 29-7 3/4) also won for CdM.

CdM’s Jillian Beese, Katya Hanessian, Morgan Simon and Tiffany Ginger won the 4x100 relay in 52.1.

Erika Anderson, Kirsten Hansen, Katie Sullivan and Elin Wolker won the 4x400 relay for the Sea Kings in 4:25.2.

SOFTBALL

Westminster 9, Estancia 2

WESTMINSTER — Freshman Kalena Shepard had an RBI single for the Eagles in Thursday’s nonleague road game.

Estancia (8-4) returns to action April 14, in its Orange Coast League opener at Calvary Chapel.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Mater Dei 15, Newport Harbor 4

Daniela Vazquez scored two goals for the Sailors in Wednesday’s nonleague game at Newport Harbor High.

Andie Piovesan and Rylie Siegfried also scored, while Mia Bagiu and Katie Kendrix each had three draw controls against the top-ranked Monarchs. Montana Mattox had 13 saves.

Newport Harbor returns to Century SE League play April 14 at El Dorado.

BOYS’ TRACK & FIELD

Woodbridge 72, Corona del Mar 51

Silviu Bocancea won the shot put (46-9 1/4) and discus (153-9) events for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League meet Thursday.

Leif Hellgren won the 3,200 in 12:04.9 for CdM.

Austin Baxter, Gabe Dickens, Ethan Lindt and Omar Adel won the 4x400 relay in 3:59.9.
