High School Roundup: Sailors earn first league win

BASEBALL

Newport Harbor 6, Los Alamitos 3

Cameron Jabara provided a lift for the Sailors helping them earn their first Sunset League win Wednesday at Newport Harbor.

Jabara smacked in the go-ahead run to give Newport Harbor a 4-3 lead.

Starter Shaun Vetrovec got the win. He went six innings and finished with seven strikeouts, two earned runs, six hits and four walks. Liam Ogburn pitched the seventh

Sean Korkmas had two hits and Jake Genova had one hit and two RBIs for the Sailors (7-4, 1-3 in league), who play at Marina on Friday.

BOYS’ GOLF

Corona del Mar 191, San Clemente 191

SAN CLEMENTE — Karick Brown’s six-over-par 41 proved to be the difference, helping the Sea Kings break a tie during a nonleague match at Talega Golf Club on Wednesday.

The tiebreaker was the scores of each team’s sixth golfer and Brown’s card was four strokes better than San Clemente’s golfer.

CdM’s Chase Furey earned medalist honors with a 36. His brother, Hale, had a 37.

The rest of the Sea Kings (10-2) were Drew Hanson (38), Ian Fletcher (39) and John Hong (41).

The Sea Kings compete at the Tournament of Champions at Golf Club at Terra Lago in Indio on Friday and Saturday.

Estancia 185, Costa Mesa 260

Kobi Uta and Davin Ortiz each recorded one-over-par 36s to share medalist honors for the Eagles in an Orange Coast League match at Costa Mesa Country Club’s Mesa Linda course on Wednesday.

Jaime Ramirez shot a 37 for Estancia (5-6, 3-1 in league), followed by 38s by Parker Ohland and Brad Ehrhorn.

The Eagles play host to Lakewood at Costa Mesa Country Club’s Mesa Linda course on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.

Edison 206, Newport Harbor 219

SANTA ANA — Brad Tapfer finished with a 42 for the Sailors, who dropped to 0-6 in Sunset League play on Wednesday at Santa Ana Country Club.

Newport Harbor’s Mason Moody had a 43, and Ryan Standt and Landon Knight each fired 44s.

The Sailors (5-6 overall) play Los Alamitos at Big Canyon Country Club on Thursday at 3 p.m.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Godinez 107, Costa Mesa 68

Tyler Connors was a double winner for the Mustangs in Wednesday’s Orange Coast League meet.

Connors won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:06.33, and the 100 backstroke in 57.38.

Raymond Andrade won the 50 freestyle (23.78) and Andrew Palacious won the 500 free (5:47.22) for Costa Mesa.

Laguna Beach 137, Estancia 32

LAGUNA BEACH — The Eagles dropped to 3-3, 0-2 in Orange Coast League play on Wednesday.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Corona del Mar 101, Woodbridge 69

IRVINE — CdM senior Stephanie Samudro won two individual events in Wednesday’s Pacific Coast League meet on the road.

Samudro was first in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:04.48, lowering her CIF automatic time. She also won the 100 fly, in 57.08 seconds.

Meagan Popp won the 200 individual medley in a CIF automatic time of 2:07.02, and Marina Coskinas won the 500 free in 5:33.93.

CdM (2-0 in league) also won the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.

Costa Mesa 82, Godinez 80

Lauren Smith won both distance freestyle events for the Mustangs in Wednesday’s Orange Coast League meet.

Smith won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:08.16, as well as the 500 free in 5:50.94. Bridgette Smitherman won the 100 free (1:04.34) and Devon Christensen won the 50 free (28.55 seconds).

Christensen, Yesennia Villa, Smitheram and Smith combined to win both freestyle relay races.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar 15, Irvine 3

IRVINE — Oliver Kim, Bjorn Hoffmann and Ryan Andrews swept in singles for CdM in Wednesday’s Pacific Coast League road match.

Corona del Mar (10-2, 4-1 in league) plays host to Beckman on Thursday.
