Track & Field: Newport’s Bender breaks three school records

Two meets

Newport Harbor High senior Hope Bender broke three school records at the Beach Cities Invitational at Huntington Beach High Saturday.

Bender placed second in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.97 seconds, improving her new school record set two weeks ago at the Irvine Invitational. She was second in the 200 at 25.40, breaking the previous school record of 25.44 set by Amy Burlingham in 2000. And, she was third in the 400 at 57.52, breaking the previous school record of 57.83 set by Burligham in 2003.

Junior Grace Clemence finished fourth in the pole vault at 10 feet.

Junior Rachelle A La Torre was third in the discus (128-3) and fourth in the shot put.

Sophomore Cole Smith was fourth in the shot put (personal-best 52-6 1/2) and seventh in the discus (149-0)

Senior Kyle Fegan and brother Ryan, a sophomore, tied for seventh in the pole vault with clearance at 12-0.

Meanwhile, Newport Harbor’s distance runners competed at the Meet of Champions Distance Classic at Azusa Pacific University.

Junior Emily Bacon finished second in heat of the 1,600, finishing in a season-best 5:14.40. Senior Erin Barth was fifth in a season-best 5:19.83.

Junior Kendal Marking won her heat of the 1,600 in a personal-best 5:15.51.
