College Roundup: UCI upsets Long Beach State

UC Irvine def. Long Beach State

Senior Connor Hughes tied his career-high with 19 kills to lead the No. 8-ranked Anteaters to a 25-22, 25-14, 26-24 upset over the No. 4 49ers in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action at the Bren Center Friday.

The Anteaters improve to 16-9 overall and 13-8 in the MPSF, while Long Beach goes to 16-7 on the year and 13-7 in the MPSF. The win gives UCI two points in the Black & Blue Rivalry presented by Duke’s of Huntington Beach.

Hughes was almost perfect as he had just one error in 37 attempts for a .486 clip. His 19 kills tied his career best previously set against Stanford on April 28, 2012. The outside hitter also added seven digs and an ace.

UCI outside hitter Jeremy Dejno recorded 11 kills, an ace and seven digs, while senior setter Daniel Stork guide the Anteaters with 38 set assists, two aces and tied his career-high with 12 digs. Libero Michael Brinkley recorded a season-best 18 digs. Opposite Zack La Cavera totaled nine kills followed by Collin Mehring with six kills and Scott Kevorken with four kills and a team-best four blocks. Tamir Hershko also had two kills.

The Anteaters, who have won seven of the last eight outings, will travel to UC San Diego Friday for the lone match of the week.

BASEBALL

Irvine Valley 4, Orange Coast 3

Cody Bruder, Grant Davis and Cody Nulph had two hits each for the Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Friday.

Tommy Bell and Daniel Delaney drove in one run each for OCC (20-7, 8-5 in conference).

IVC is 7-18, 3-10.

Vanguard 8, Westmont 2

Brett Collins went four for five with one run scored for the Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game on Friday.

Nick Rodda was two for four with four runs batted in and one run scored for Vanguard (22-11, 14-8 in conference).

Westmont is 20-13, 11-12.

ROWING

Newport Regatta

Orange Coast College crew won the Palmer Cup at the Newport Regatta on Sunday in Newport Harbor.

The Pirates posted 17 points, besting the University of San Diego (16) and UC Santa Barbara (15). UCLA, San Diego State and UC Irvine also accumulated team points.

OCC won the novice eight race in 6 minutes, 16 seconds, and also won the second novice eight final in 6:52.8.

The Pirates were third and fourth in the second varsity eight and varsity eight races, respectively, both of which were won by San Diego.

OCC is at the San Diego Crew Classic on April 5 in Mission Bay.
