All-League Honors: Sea Kings’ Fults named PCL’s top player

Corona del Mar High senior forward Kevin Fults earned the Pacific Coast League MVP award for lifting the boys’ basketball program to an undefeated league championship and a CIF Southern Section Division 3A runner-up finish.

Fults is on the first team with senior Ryan Stone. Fults and Stone were instrumental in helping Coach Ryan Schachter claim his third undefeated league title, reach his second section final and make his second appearance in the CIF State Southern California Regional Division III playoffs during his nine seasons at CdM.

After the Sea Kings lost to Beverly Hills, 55-47, in the CIF Southern Section Division 3A finale at Azusa Pacific University, they won at El Cajon Valley, 46-33, earning their first win in the state tournament in 15 seasons. The Sea Kings (25-8, 10-0 in league) lost to La Verne Damien, 61-56, in the state quarterfinals.

Fults averaged 8.5 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. He’s headed to UC Santa Barbara to play volleyball.

Stone was the team’s defensive stopper, usually holding the other team’s top scorer below his season average. Stone averaged 5.6 points and 1.6 steals per game.

Corona del Mar junior forward Matt Ctvrtlik, senior point guard Bo St. Geme and junior shooting guard Sam Kobrine each made the second team.

Three on first team

Costa Mesa High freshman center Alessia Vitiello and senior defender Melissa Folkerts, as well as Estancia senior driver Jenna Rutledge, have earned first-team All-Orange Coast League honors for girls’ water polo.

Vitiello stepped in to score a team-best 47 goals for the Mustangs (8-16, 2-2 in league). Mesa finished third in league and advanced to the wild-card round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs in coaches’ Cody and Dustin Serrano’s first year at the helm. Vitiello also had 28 steals and nine assists.

Folkerts, a co-captain, had 14 goals, a team-best 22 assists and 23 steals.

Rutledge was a team captain for the Eagles, who finished 4-14, 0-4 in league.

Costa Mesa senior attacker Bridgette Smitheram and sophomore attacker Brenna Alvis earned second-team honors, as did Estancia senior centers Natalie Smith and Haley Hopp.

CdM’s Schwartz Offensive MVP

Corona del Mar High senior midfielder Evan Schwartz took home the Pacific Coast League Offensive MVP award in boys’ soccer.

Schwartz, who is headed to UC Santa Barbara, produced eight goals and four assists for the fourth-place Sea Kings (7-9-4, 4-4-2 in league), who missed the CIF Southern Section playoffs for the first time in Coach George Larsen’s six seasons.

Blake Munger, a junior striker, garnered first-team laurels after finishing with 13 goals, 11 coming in league action.

Junior Will Hunter and senior Paris Mamatas were second-team selections from CdM.

Two Sailors earn first-team honors

Newport Harbor High seniors Alan Alcantara and Marlon Nava each earned first-team All-Sunset League honors in boys’ soccer.

Alcantara, a striker bound for UC Riverside, is a repeat first-team selection for the Sailors (9-10-4, 3-6-1 in league), who finished last in league during Coach Juan Mares’ fifth and final season in charge. Alcantara had eight goals and six assists.

Nava, a center midfielder, had three goals and two assists.

Hugo Enriquez, a senior center midfielder, is on the second team. He recorded five goals and two assists.

Huntington Beach’s Calvin Cruz was named MVP.

Costa Mesa’s Tufuga shines

Costa Mesa High junior center Mason Tufuga garnered first-team All-Orange Coast League honors in boys’ basketball.

Tufuga averaged 10 points, eight rebounds and two blocks per game for the Mustangs, who earned an at-large entry into the CIF Southern Section Division 4AA playoffs. They lost at No. 4-seeded Westlake Village Oaks Christian, 62-36, in the first round.

Costa Mesa (9-18, 2-8 in league) shared last place with rival Estancia (9-18, 2-8).

Estancia junior forward Connor Brown made the second team. He averaged six points and six rebounds per game. The Eagles, an at-large entry, lost at Pomona, 72-37, in their Division 4AA first-round game.

Costa Mesa junior forward Nabeel Salameh was a second-team member.

Godinez senior Brandon Smith, bound for UC Irvine, was the league MVP.

Sage’s Hague makes first team

Tyler Hague is the lone Sage Hill School boys’ basketball player on the All-Academy League first team after leading the program to single-season bests in wins and league wins.

Hague, a forward, helped Sage Hill (18-7, 9-3 in league) to a second straight third-place finish in league. Sage Hill lost at Loma Linda Academy, 80-78, in double overtime in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 5AA playoffs.

Hague, a two-time first-team pick, averaged 13.3 points per game.

Sage Hill senior center Chance Kuehnel and senior point guard Krishan Tarsadia each made the second team, while senior guard CJ McCord was an honorable mention.

St. Margaret’s Brent Cahill was the MVP.

Tars’ Faris, Davis recognized

Newport Harbor High seniors Joey Faris and Chase Davis are both on the All-Sunset League second team in boys’ basketball for helping the Sailors place third in league for the second season in a row.

Faris led Newport Harbor (11-18, 4-6 in league), averaging 10 points and three steals per game). He shot 43% from the field and averaged four rebounds per game.

Coach Bob Torribio guided Newport Harbor to the postseason for the third consecutive season. The Sailors’ season ended with a 56-49 loss at Redlands in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA playoffs.

Davis, a point guard, averaged five points per game.

Edison’s Brae Ivey was named MVP.
