High School Roundup: Quartet leads NHHS girls to win over HB

GIRLS’ TRACK & FIELD

Newport Harbor 86, Huntington Beach 50

Hope Bender, Natalie Ward, Rachelle A La Torre and Samantha Yeager won two events each for the host Sailors in the Sunset League meet Thursday.

Bender won the 200 meters in 27.6 seconds and took first in the 400 in 1:03.3. Ward won the 100 hurdles in 16.9 and 300 hurdles in 49.3. A La Torre won the shotput (37 feet, 8 inches) and discus (118-2), with personal records in each event. Yeager won the long jump (14-6) and triple jump (29-2 1/2).

In addition, Newport Harbor’s Emily Bacon won the 3,200 in 12:02.

Corona del Mar 104, Irvine 18

Sophie Shambrook, Lilly Schmidt and Claire Keddington won two individual events each for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League meet Thursday.

Shambrook won the 200 meters in 27.3 seconds and the 100 hurdles in 16.8. She was also on the victorious 4x100 relay with Jillian Beese, Emily Glenn and Jessie Harris that won in 51.4.

Schmidt won the 800 in 2:27.0 and the 1,600 in 5:19.8. Keddington won the long jump (14-8 1/2) and triple jump (33-0).

Other CdM winners included Emma Kratzberg (1:01.3 in the 400), Jacqueline Choe (11:36.9 in the 3,200), Glenn (48.4 in the 300 hurdles), Asha Hardy (5-0 in the high jump), Maria King (30-5 1/2 in the shotput) and Amanda Cooper (108-5 in the discus).

BOYS’ TRACK & FIELD

Newport Harbor 69, Huntington Beach 67

Marcell DeBarros won three events to help the Sailors edge the Oilers in a Sunset League meet Thursday.

DeBarros won the 400 meters in 53.7 seconds. He also set a personal record in his victory in the 110 hurdles, in 15.4, and he won the 300 hurdles in 42 seconds.

Cory Stowell won the 100 meters in 11.6 and the 200 in 24.2, and anchored the victorious 4x100 relay in 44.9 seconds. That Newport Harbor relay team also included Quest Truxton, Rory Fleming and Chance Siemonsma.

Will Fortier won the shotput (53-8) and he was second in the discus (150-4). Steve Mantei won the discus (152-6 1/2) and second in the shotput (46-9).

Corona del Mar 84, Irvine 36

Matt Hurst won two events for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League meet Thursday.

He won the 200 meters in 22.1 seconds and the 400 in 51.5.

Other CdM winners included Nick Willard (11.0 in the 100), Ethan Hold (2:07.9 in the 800), Spencer Keith (4:43.8 in the 1,600), Thomas Robertson (10:37.0 in the 3,200), Cole Martin (36-5 1/2 in the triple jump), Alex Wilde (6-2 in the high jump) and Gio Gentosi (44-5 1/2 in the shotput).

The Sea Kings’ victorious 4x400 relay team featured Martin, Barrett Barbato, Willard and Hurst who won in 42.9.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Newport Harbor 15, Huntington Beach 3

Reese Stalder remained undefeated on the season after he swept at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, for the Sailors in their Sunset League opener at Huntington Beach High Thursday.

Sean Perrier and Garrett Byers swept at No. 1 doubles, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2. David Schaefer and Phillip Vu swept at No. 2 doubles, 6-0, 6-4, 6-2. Gavin Leonard swept at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-0, 6-2, for Newport Harbor (9-1, 1-0 in league).

Corona del Mar 12, Woodbridge 6

Carson Williams and Ryan Andrews swept in singles for CdM in Thursday’s Pacific Coast League match.

Tyler Gaede and Samee Aboubakare won twice in doubles before being subbed out.

The Sea Kings (9-1, 3-0 in league), ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, play at top-ranked University on Tuesday.

SOFTBALL

Costa Mesa 4, La Quinta 2

Zaira Lopez had an RBI triple for the Mustangs as they won their first game of the year Thursday at Costa Mesa High.

Brenna Alvis had two stolen bases and Jenny Garcia one steal for Mesa, which scored three runs in the fifth inning for the comeback victory.

Coach Heather Orduna said the Mustangs (1-9) played their best defense of the season.

BOYS’ GOLF

Edison 173, Newport Harbor 193

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Thomas Terry shot one-over-par 36 to lead the Sailors in the Sunset League match Thursday at SeaCliff Country Club.

Landon Knight (37), Brad Tapfer (38), Connor Davidson (39) and Mason Moody (44) also scored for Newport Harbor (5-3, 0-3 in league).

Edison’s Kevin Steinfeld was the medalist with a three-under round.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Newport Harbor 8, Valencia 5

Sophomore midfielder Rylie Siegfried had five draw controls and two ground balls; she added two caused turnovers and a goal for the Sailors in the nonleague game Thursday.

Senior captain Cailynn Smethurst kicked and caught 10 Valencia shots (67%).

Junior attacker Daniela Vazquez added her signature game-winner, and added an insurance goal for good measure, tying senior captain Alex Palmer for the scoring lead with two. Senior exchange student Birgit Drevvatne netted the first of her varsity career.
