Orange Coast 9, Santa Ana 3

SANTA ANA — The visiting Pirates moved into first place in the Orange Empire Conference as sophomore Dominic Purpura posted his sixth save on Saturday.

Purpura allowed one earned run in three innings to help J.T. McClellan, who tossed 3 2/3 scoreless relief innings, earn the win.

Cole Rutherford was two for four with two runs batted in, while Jeff Nellis had three RBIs and Chris Prescott added two for OCC (16-9, 7-3 in conference).

Santa Ana is 11-11-1, 2-8.

Doubleheader

Host Vanguard University swept the Golden State Athletic Conference twin bill against William Jessup on Saturday, winning the first game, 5-2, and the second game, 11-1.

Brett Collins had a two-run double to key a three-run eighth inning that broke a 2-2 tie in the opener. Collins was four for seven in the two games.

Brock Eissman had three runs batted in in the second game and was four for eight on the day.

Paul Keating was two for four in Game 1 and Jose Rojas had a home run and two RBIs in Game 2 for Vanguard (23-12, 17-10 in conference).

Scott Torrey allowed one earned run on three hits in seven innings but did not get a decision in the opener, in which Marshall McKinnon worked two perfect innings to improve to 4-1.

William Jessup is 5-22, 5-20.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Spring Break Invitational

The UC Irvine women’s track and field team capitalized on balance across the events to win the Spring Break Invitational at Anteater Stadium Saturday.

UCI finished with 181 points, Northern Arizona was second with 169 and Army third with 144.

Freshman Persis William-Mensah, an Estancia High product, won the 100 meters in 12.01 seconds and she finished second in the 200 meters in 25.24.

Megan George (14.13) and Tyra Jones (14.65) finished 1-2 in the 100-meter hurdles while Kaulyn Lee-McNeill (61.26) and Jones (64.04) did the same in the 400 hurdles.

UCI won both relays as the 4x100 of Taisyn Crutchfield, George, Jones and William-Mensah recorded a time of 47.15 with the 4x400 of Lee-McNeill, George, Brenna McNulty and Simone Buchanan posted a first-place time of 3:47.96.

Makenna McGrann finished second in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:41.61, Crutchfield placed third in the 200 meters in 25.79, and Buchanan was third in the 400 (58.03).

In the field events, Ariel Cheng won the pole vault with a mark of 12-3 ½ and Rebecka Miranda placed first in the triple jump at 38-2 ¼, tying her No. 9 mark in Anteater history.

Madelyn Sando was second in the high jump at 5-1 and Lauren Ellison finished third in the long jump at 17-9.

UCI competes in the UCR Spring Classic Thursday through Saturday in Riverside.
