High School Roundup: CdM’s Martino, Brooks named all-tournament

Joey Martino and Tommy Brooks earned all-tournament honors for their play in the Best of the West Tournament in Poway that ended Saturday.

Martino and Brooks helped lead the Sea Kings to the semifinals of the gold division.

CdM (7-1) begins competition in the OC Championships Friday.

Newport Harbor def. Los Alamitos

Clay Carr recorded 23 kills to lead the Sailors to a 25-19, 25-19, 25-16 Sunset League-opening win at Newport Harbor Thursday.

Wyatt Walton (12 kills), Landon Monroe (35 assists) and Nic Sargeant (seven digs) also contributed for Newport Harbor (3-7, 1-0 in league).

Corona del Mar 182, Beckman 200

Karick Brown shot one-under-par 34 to earn medalist honors to help the Sea Kings win their Pacific Coast League opener Thursday at Newport Beach Country Club.

Chase Furey (35), Hale Furey (36), Ian Fletcher (38) and John Hong (39) also scored for CdM (6-1, 1-0 in league).

Newport Harbor 196, Aliso Niguel 199

ALISO VIEJO — Senior Thomas Terry shot even-par 37 to earn medalist honors, leading the Sailors to the nonleague win Thursday at Aliso Viejo Country Club.

Connor Davison (38), Danny Willet (39), Mason Moody (40) and Landon Knight (42) also scored for Newport Harbor (5-1).

SOFTBALL

Corona del Mar 13, Oxford Academy 7

Brooke Franson went two for four with a double and three runs batted in to help the Sea Kings win their second game in the La Quinta Tournament Thursdday.

Mylie Wilson drew five walks. Sydney McKeown went three for four and Lauren Oberreiter went two for two with two walks.

Estancia 23, Laguna Beach 1

LAGUNA BEACH — Senior pitcher Kelly Hinkle had nine strikeouts for the Eagles in Thursday’s Orange Coast League opener on the road.

Maya Van Den Heever added a home run for Estancia (8-2, 1-0 in league).

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Sage Hill 11, Rosary 10

Natalie Lowenstein led the Lightning with five goals in the nonleague game at Sage Hill.

Goalie Vale Lewis recorded 12 saves for Sage Hill (3-5).
