College Roundup: OCC shuts out Riverside

Sophomore left-hander Art Vidrio tossed a one-hitter to lead the host Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Thursday.

Vidrio gave up a leadoff double, then retired 26 of the next 29 he face. He struck out nine and improved to 5-1.

Jeff Nellis was two for two with three runs batted in and Nick Grimes was two for four with two runs to help OCC’s nine-hit attack.

The Pirates are 15-9, 2-6 in conference.

Riverside is 15-7, 6-3.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

Host Vanguard University’s nonconference sweep Thursday was Taylor-made.

Taylor Hallahan was a combined six for seven and drove in a run to lead the Lions (27-7) to a 4-2 win in Game 1 and an 8-0 triumph in the second game against Augsburg.

Taylor Wilson was a combined four for five with one RBI and two runs and Taylor Doyle threw a complete-game four-hitter in the opener to improve to 7-0.

Shelby Ross tossed a six-inning shutout in the second game, allowing seven hits and improving to 4-1.

Breanne Gomez was a combined three for six with four RBIs on the day, while Brittney Boggs was three for three with one RBI in the opener.

Augsburg is 4-12.
