High School Roundup: CdM boys’ swim team wins Capo Valley Relays

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Capistrano Valley Relays

MISSION VIEJO — The Sea Kings won the title, placing top four in all seven events Saturday at Capistrano Valley High.

CdM set the meet record in the 400-yard individual medley, as senior Justin Hanson, junior Tim Hanson, senior Taylor Cortens and senior Tyler Lin touched in 3 minutes, 28.61 seconds. CdM also placed first in the 4x50 backstroke, as sophomore Ethan Archer, junior Tanner Roletter, senior Patrick Ong and Cortens touched in 1:38.61. The Sea Kings’ Archer, Lin, Justin Hanson and Jon Polos finished first in the 200 medley relay (1:35.52).

Another highlight was the 6x50 relay, in which CdM’s Polos, Vincent Ong, Roletter, Baer Lanfried, Foster Hoose and Andres White placed fourth in 2:16.00. All six are non-club swimmers and water polo players.

Estancia 112, Savanna 53

Jason Chesemore, Cobi White, Gavin Kane and Chris Defrenza won two events each for the Eagles in the nonleague meet Tuesday.

Jason Chesemore won the 50-yard freestyle (24.30) and 100 freestyle (55.39), Cobi White won the 200 individual medley (2:22.52) and 100 breaststroke (1:13.70), Gavin Kane the 200 free (2:12.77) and 500 free (5:57.54) and Defrenza the 100 butterfly (1:11.45) and 100 backstroke (1:06.62) for Estancia (3-2).

Defrenza, White and Chesesmore were on two winning relay team, as was Kent Lim.

SOFTBALL

Estancia 16, Santiago 13

GARDEN GROVE — Senior Gianna Guyot had five hits, including a grand slam, and six runs batted in for the Eagles in Tuesday’s nonleague game.

Felicia Rios had a home run and a triple, and Kelena Shepherd also hit a home run.

Maya Van Den Heever and Lesly Gomez each added two hits for Estancia (5-2).

BOYS’ TENNIS

Los Alamitos 15, Corona del Mar 3

The Sea Kings fell to 3-3 after losing the matchup of CIF Southern Section Division 1 powers Tuesday.

Los Alamitos is ranked No. 3 in Division 1, with CdM at No. 8.

CdM plays at rival Newport Harbor in the Battle of the Bay on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Sage Hill 13, JSerra 5

The host Lightning won eight of nine doubles sets in the nonleague match Wednesday at The Tennis Club.

Sage Hill, ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section Division 2, plays host to The Gilman School of Baltimore on Wednesday before playing at rival St. Margaret’s to open Academy League play on Friday.

Newport Harbor 11, St. Margaret’s 7

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO – David Lee swept at No. 2 singles and did not drop a game for the Sailors in the nonleague match on Monday.

The No. 1 doubles team David Scheafer and Andy Myers, and the No. 2 doubles team of David Sharpe and Sam Leeman won two of three for Newport Harbor.

Newport Harbor 12, Crean Lutheran 6

Reese Stalder swept at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0, for the Sailors in the nonleague match on Tuesday.

David Lee won two of three at No. 2 singles, as did Gavin Leonard at No. 3 singles for Newport Harbor (6-0).

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Capistrano Valley Relays

MISSION VIEJO — CdM placed fourth in the competition Saturday at Capistrano Valley High.

The Sea Kings’ quartet of Harvard-bound senior Meagan Popp, sophomore Nicole Lin, senior Eliza Britt and freshman Eva Merrell placed second in the 400 IM, in 4 minutes, 0.79 seconds. Cdm’s Popp, Lin, Merrell and senior Sami Pratt were also second in the 200 medley relay (1:47.32).

Popp, Lin, senior Grace Morgan and Merrell were third in the 4x100 free relay (3:34.15).

It was the first high school meet for Merrell, a top freshman who set the national age-group record in the 13-14 100 butterfly last December.

BOYS’ GOLF

San Clemente 187, Corona del Mar 188

Tyler See shot one-over-par 36 for the Sea Kings in the nonleague match at Newport Beach Country Club Tuesday.

Ian Fletcher (37), John Hong (38), John Michael Jurgensen (39) and Ethan Wien (39) also scored for CdM (1-3).

Estancia 193, Brethren Christian 223

Kobi Uta shot one-under-par 34 to earn medalist honors for the Eagles in the nonleague match at Costa Mesa Country Club’s Mesa Linda course on Tuesday.

Parker Ohland (35), Cody Nelson (39), Brad Erhorn (42) and Dalton Manchester (43) also scored for Estancia (3-2).

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Trabuco Hills 15, Newport Harbor 3

John Mooers scored two goals and had two takeaways for the Sailors in the nonleague game Tuesday night.

Blake Lenk had one goal and four ground balls, while PJ Steiner won 12 of 14 face-offs for Newport Harbor (1-5).

Corona del Mar 19, St. John’s of Houston 1

Junior Nate Neuman scored four goals and had three ground balls for the Sea Kings in th enonleague game on Monday.

Senior Max Kline (two assists) and senior Noah Howe scored three goals each, while junior Jack Denning scored two goals.

Junior Jordan Greenhall (one goal, four assists, one ground ball), senior Ben Palitz (one goal, two assists), junior Ben Palitz (one goal, two assists), junior Stephen Von Der Ahe (one goal, two assists), senior Sherwin Gersten (one goal, one assist), freshman Eric Fries (first varsity goal, one assist), sophomore Sachin Gokhale (first varsity goal, one assist), junior Nick Yi (two assists, two ground balls) and junior Jason Simaan (won first 11 faceoffs) also contributed for CdM.

TRACK & FIELD

Irvine Invitational

IRVINE — Costa Mesa High’s Anuare Magana was named Athlete of the Meet after winning the 1,600 meters in 4 minutes, 26.2 seconds and the 3,200 in 9:30.9 Saturday.

Paige LaBare won the 200 (26.5) and placed second in the 100 (12.9). John Hernandez won the 800 (2:03.2) to help the boys’ team place third.

LaBare helped the girls finish seventh out of 19 teams.

The Mustangs open Orange Coast League action Thursday against Estancia and Calvary Chapel at Jim Scott Stadium, starting at 3 p.m.
