High School Roundup: Vetrovec strikes out 14 in one-hitter

Newport Harbor 3, La Habra 0

Shaun Vetrovec, a UC Irvine-bound senior, threw a complete-game shutout, striking out 14, while allowing one hit and two walks in the Sailors’ home game in the Foothill Pool of the Newport Elks Tournament on Wednesday.

Vetrovec went two for three with three runs batted in and a double.

Vetrovec has thrown 13 shutout innings in his two starts, both victories.

Jake Genova and Connor Seabold each had a hit for Newport Harbor (3-1).

The Sailors’ final game in the tournament is at Laguna Hills on Friday at 3 p.m.

Estancia 26, Santa Ana Valley 1

SANTA ANA — Junior Jacob Mullison pitched three innings, helping the visiting Eagles earn their first win of the season, coming during an OC Division game at the Newport Elks Tournament on Wednesday.

The game was called after five innings because of the mercy rule. The Eagles totaled 15 hits, seven going for extra bases, and they walked 13 times.

Estancia’s Colin Gardner went three for five with four runs batted, a double and three runs.

Aaron Boaitey went two for five with five RBIs and a triple.

Connor Brown was three for five with three RBIs and a double.

Estancia (1-3) closes out tournament play at home Friday against La Puente Nogales at 3 p.m.

Costa Mesa 10, Los Amigos 6

Ryan Lether picked up the win for the host Mustangs, going four innings and allowing two earned runs and striking out three in a OC Division game at the Newport Elks Tournament on Wednesday.

Costa Mesa (1-3) wraps up tournament play on Friday at home against Santa Ana Valley at 3 p.m.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Corona del Mar 19, University 1

IRVINE — Sophomore Jordan Greenhall finished with five goals and two assists in the Sea Kings’ opener on the road Wednesday.

Noah Howe and Nino Chaves had three goals and four assists apiece for CdM.

Jason Simaan won 15 faceoffs and had three assists, while Dave Coop and Cole Campbell played well on defense.

The Sea Kings play host to St. John’s of Houston, Texas, on Monday at 3:30 p.m.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Corona del Mar 9, Mission Viejo 5

MISSION VIEJO — Sabrina Smith recorded four goals for the Sea Kings in a nonleague game on Wednesday.

Peyton Carter and Kendall Mulvaney had two goals apiece for CdM (2-2).

Jamie Smith had two assists.

Corona del Mar 196, Aliso Niguel 202

LAGUNA NIGUEL — Hale Furey shot a two-under-par 34 round that featured one eagle and two birdies, to earn medalist honors for the Sea Kings in the nonleague match Wednesday at El Niguel Country Club

Chase Furey (37), Karick Brown (39) and Drew Hanson (41) also contributed for CdM (3-0).

Sea Kings Ian Fletcher, John Hong and Garrett Wayne each shot 45.

University 199, Sage Hill 218

IRVINE — Junior Adam Wang shot a five-over-par 41 for the Lightning in a nonleague match at Strawberry Farms Golf Club on Wednesday.

Max Nanula finished with a 43, followed by 44s by Max Liu and Hank Wu.

The Lightning dropped to 0-2.

University’s Jordan Cheng and William Tse shared medalist honors with 39s.
