CdM’s Griffin, Bassler to compete as walk-ons at UCLA, USC

Corona del Mar High defensive back Charlie Griffin will be a walk-on player with the UCLA football program and offensive lineman Quinn Bassler at USC, said Sea Kings Coach Scott Meyer.

Griffin and Bassler played instrumental roles during the Sea Kings’ historic season in which they won a second straight undefeated Pacific Coast League title, a third straight CIF Southern Section Southern Division title, and its first CIF State Division III Bowl Game title. Corona del Mar became the first high school football team in California to go 16-0.

Griffin made the MaxPreps.com California Division III All-State Football First Team, All-CIF Southern Section Southern Division team, All-Pacific Coast League second team and Daily Pilot Newport-Mesa Dream Team.

Griffin, a three-year starter, finished with 65 tackles and one interception.

Bassler, who is 6-foot-7, helped CdM’s offense average 219.1 rushing yards, 171.9 passing yards and 34.3 points per game.
