Newport Harbor High two-way standout Cory Stowell said he has committed to the San Diego State football program.

“I chose [to go] there because I fell in love with the campus visiting my sophomore year,” Stowell said. “The coaching staff is very sincere and straight forward on the day-to-day work spent on the field. My dream was to play D1 football and now I have the chance to do just that.”

Stowell, a cornerback and wide receiver, led the Sailors (8-6, 3-2 in Sunset League) to the CIF Southern Section Southwest Division championship game during his senior season. The section finals appearance was the program’s eighth under Coach Jeff Brinkley.

Stowell made the MaxPreps.com California Division II All-State Football Second Team as a defensive back. He intercepted six passes, made 53 tackles and blocked two kicks.

Stowell finished with 83 catches, tying a Newport Harbor single-season school record, for 1,074 yards and nine touchdowns.

He earned All-CIF Southern Section Southwest Division, first-team All-Orange County, Sunset League Defensive Back of the Year and Daily Pilot Newport-Mesa Dream Team honors.
