High School Roundup: CdM edges Newport Harbor in girls’ track & field

Jacqueline Choe won the 3,200-meter race to help the Corona del Mar High girls’ track and field team edge Newport Harbor, 64-63, in the Battle of the Bay Wednesday.

Choe won in 11 minutes, 37.5 seconds.

Hope Bender led Newport Harbor with four wins, taking first in the 200 (25.5 seconds), 400 (59.5), 100 hurdles (15.3) and long jump (15 feet, 7 inches). Rachelle A La Torre was a double winner for NHHHS, winning the discus (119-0 1/4) and shot put (36-9 3/4)

Pagie Fults (12.8 in the 100), Lauren Loucks (2:29.8 in the 800), Erin Barth (5:28.5 in the 1,600) and Sydney Campbell (52.9 in the 300 hurdles) also won for the Sailors.

For CdM, Jillian Beese won the triple jump (30-10) and Victoria Rihm won the high jump (5-0).

BOYS’ TRACK & FIELD

Corona del Mar 84, Newport Harbor 43

Sutton Barbato, Parker Nostrand and Austin Baxter won two events each and were on a winning relay team for the Sea Kings in the Battle of the Bay Tuesday.

Barbato won the 100 meters in 11.3 seconds and 200 in 23.8. Nostrand came in first in the 400 (52.9) and 800 (2:06.4). Baxter won the 110 hurdles (18.1) and 300 hurdles (43.9).

Leif Hellgren won the 1,600 (4:37.4), Thomas Robertson took first in the 3,200 (10:41.4) and Andrew Wysopal came in first in the long jump (18-0 1/2) for CdM.

Tristan Manning and Stephen Mantei were double winners for Newport Harbor.

Manning won the triple jump (38-7 1/2) and high jump (5-10), and Mantei the shot put (48-4 1/2) and discus (145-11 1/2).

CdM’s Ryan Myers won the pole vault (12-0).

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Newport Harbor 12, Laguna Hills 6

LAGUNA HILLS — Junior Rylie Siegfried had three goals, three draw controls, a ground ball and an interception for the Sailors in their nonleague season opener Tuesday on the road.

Seven different Sailors scored and senior goalie Montana Mattox had 10 saves.

Newport Harbor plays host to Downey on Thursday.
