College Roundup: VU baseball sweeps Biola

Doubleheader

Host Vanguard University swept Biola in Golden State Athletic Conference play on Monday, behind the strong hitting of Thomas Mobley and a pair of quality performances from starting pitchers.

Mobley went two for four with a run batted in in the 3-1 opening win and was two for three with an RBI to help the Lions post a 4-3 win in Game 2.

Scott Torrey allowed just one earned run and seven hits in nine innings in Game 1 to improve to 4-1.

In the second game, Richard Perry allowed one earned run and four hits in five innings, but wasn’t around for the decision.

Vanguard broke a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning of a game scheduled for seven innings, when John Schwer doubled in Mobley, who led off the inning with a bunt single.

Vanguard is 12-8, 7-7 in conference.

Biola is 8-17, 4-10.

Orange Coast 6, Irvine Valley 0

Chris Iriart drove in three runs to help lead the Pirates to the Orange Empire Conference win Tuesday.

Cody Bruder went two for five with two runs scored and Cody Nulph went two for three with one run scored for OCC (14-3, 2-1 in conference).

Pirates starter Art Vidro improved to 4-0 after allowing three hits and striking out four in seven shutout innings.

Orange Coast 5, Santa Ana 0

SANTA ANA — Jacob Hill allowed seven hits and struck out seven in eight innings, Cody Bruder had three hits and Chris Iriart hit his fourth home run of the season to lead the visiting Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Monday.

Hill improved to 3-0 and lowered his earned-run average to 0.78.

Iriart drove in two runs and has 19 RBIs for the season, while Chris Blasing also homered for OCC, ranked No. 1 in Southern California.

No. 5-ranked Santa Ana fell to 10-5, 1-1.

It was the first time since March, 2009 that the Dons were shut out at home.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

Vanguard University split a pair of nonconference shutouts on Monday at Vanguard.

The Lions won the second game, 4-0, after a 7-0 loss in the opener.

In the win, junior Rachel Stalford pitched a one-hitter with seven strikeouts and three walks to improve to 5-1.

Junior Brittney Boggs was three for three and drove in one run, while junior Gabrielle Jackson had two RBIs.

The Lions managed just four hits in the first game. The Lions entered Tuesday at 13-4.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

UC Irvine 13, San Diego State 6

Sophomore McKenna Mitchell had six goals to help the host Anteaters outscore the Aztecs, 9-1, in the second half of the nonconference game on Sunday.

Jillian Yocum made seven saves for UCI (13-6).

San Diego State fell to 8-6.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

UC Irvine 4, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 0

Franziska Goettsching, Sarah Gong and Sarah Stadfelt earned singles wins for the host Anteaters in the Big West Conference match on Sunday.

Goettsching posted a 6-0, 6-2 triumph at No. 4 singles, while Gong bested her No. 3 opponent, 6-0, 6-3.

Gong and Stadfelt also combined with separate partners to earn doubles wins for UCI (5-5, 3-0 in conference).

Cal Poly dropped to 2-5, 0-2.

MEN’S TENNIS

Orange Coast 9, Cypress 0

Ryu Miyake won, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 1 singles and Pinoe Chu won, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles for the Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference match at OCC Tuesday.

Tokunosuke Takahashi and David Nguyen won at No. 1 doubles, 8-2 and Tony Wright won at No. 2 doubles, 8-1 for OCC (6-4, 2-2 in conference).
