Women’s Basketball: OCC opens at Cuesta

The Orange Coast College women’s basketball team will begin play in the 2014 Southern California regional playoffs at Cuesta on Friday at 7 p.m.

Coach Mike Thornton’s Pirates (18-10), who had to settle for second place in the Orange Empire Conference after losing its final regular-season game, is the No. 9 seed .

Cuesta (22-7), based in San Luis Obispo, is the No. 8 seed after finishing second in the Western State Conference’s North Division.

OCC, which returns to the playoffs after missing two straight seasons, boasts a balanced scoring attack led by sophomores Chanelle DiCroce (11.8 points per game) and Raechelle Davis (11.6), as well as freshman Jasmin Matar (11.5). Davis is also averaging 10.1 rebounds per contest.

Cuesta is fueled by Mariam Zabinsky (18.9 points and 7.9 rebounds per game), Courtney Chadwich (15.9 ppg) and Katie Rodriguez (10.1 ppg).

Friday’s winner will likely venture to top-seeded Ventura (27-3) in the second round on Wednesday.
