High School Roundup: CdM girls’ basketball advances to semis

Junior Natalia Bruening finished with 16 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks, leading the No. 5-seeded Sea Kings past No. 4 Sonora in the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 3AA playoffs at home on Wednesday.

CdM (22-7) advanced to the semifinals for the second straight season and will play at No. 1 North Torrance (25-2) on Saturday at 7 p.m.

“Really proud of the effort,” said Sea Kings Coach Mark Decker, whose team fell behind, 10-3, and rallied to take a 22-21 lead into halftime. “It’s a great accomplishment to go to [the] CIF semifinals two years in a row.”

Kat Hess came off the bench and had 12 points and 10 rebounds for CdM, while Brianna Westrup contributed 10 points and six steals.

Kelly Tam scored seven of her nine points in the fourth quarter. Maria King, who had six points, converted four of four free throws in the final two minutes.
