College Roundup: UCI baseball grabs first win

BASEBALL

UC Irvine 6, Cal 2

BERKELEY — Freshman Keston Hiura went two for four with a career-high four runs batted in to pace the visiting Anteaters in the nonconference game Sunday.

The win halted the longest season-opening losing streak in UCI history to give the ‘Eaters their first win in seven games this season.

Hiura belted his third homer of the season, while Andrew Martinez and John Brontsema both added RBIs for the winners.

Evan Manarino allowed two runs on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings to earn the win and Kyle Davis pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit, to collect his first save.

Manarino extended his scoreless-inning streak to 15 1/3 before allowing his first run of the season with one out in the seventh.

UCI plays Tennessee, coached by former UCI head man Dave Serrano, in the opener of a three-game nonconference series Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Vanguard 3, Corban 2

Shortstop Jose Rojas singled with the bases loaded to give the host Lions a walk-off nonconference win in 10 innings on Tuesday.

Rojas was two for four with two runs batted in, while Justin Vega was two for four with one RBI for the winners (15-6).

Michael Jordan earned the win, pitching two scoreless innings and giving up one hit and striking out two.

Starter Shaniel Riviera allowed two runs in six innings, before Christian Sheehan and Roberto Johnson combined for two scoreless relief innings.

Corban is 8-5.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

LA MIRADA — Visiting Vanguard University swept No. 14-ranked Biola on Tuesday, winning the first game, 3-1, then prevailing, 3-2, to open Golden State Athletic Conference action.

Breanne Gomez homered and drove in two runs in Game 1, in which Brittney Boggs was one for three with one RBI.

Rachel Stalford allowed one run on six hits in seven innings, striking out five to improve to 6-0.

In Game 2, Gomez homered again, her third of the season, and had two RBIs, while Shelby Kuryllo was two for two and Haley Croce drove in a run.

Shelby Ross allowed six hits in seven innings to earn the complete-game win.

Vanguard is 13-1, 2-0 in conference.

Biola is 10-6, 0-2.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Cal State San Marcos 79, Vanguard 71

Chris Gorman led the host Lions with 19 points and five assists in the nonconference game Tuesday.

DeAngelo Jones had 18 points for Vanguard, which fell to 16-13.

No. 4-ranked Cal State San Marcos is 26-3.

VALENCIA — UC Irvine freshman David Kim finished fifth with a 54-hole total of three-under-par 214 in the event completed Tuesday at Valencia Country Club.

Freshman Jonathan Young (35th) and senior Pete Fernandez (48th) also cracked the top 50 for UCI, which was 10th in the 15-team event, 40 shots behind victorious USC.

WOMEN’S GOLF

UC Irvine Invitational

SANTA ANA — UC Irvine sophomore Kaley In tied for 42nd to pace the host Anteaters in the 54-hole event completed Tuesday at Santa Ana Country Club.

Freshman Breanne Jones, playing as an individual, tied for 42nd (228), while UCI freshmen Camille Wagg and Joo Seo tied for 47th at 229.

UCI was last in the 13-school team standings.

No. 4-ranked Washington claimed the team title and Marijosse Navarro from Texas A&M was the individual champion.
