Day-Monroe breaks national record

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Sharon Day-Monroe, the former Costa Mesa High standout, shattered the national pentathlon record, as she won her third consecutive national indoor title Friday at the U.S. Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

Day-Monroe scored 4,805 points, 52 more than the previous U.S. record that had been shared between Hyleas Fountain and DeDee Nathan.

Day-Monroe began with a strong performance in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing in a personal-best 8.44 seconds.

She followed it with a 6-foot-2 clearance in the high jump. Another personal best came in the shotput, with her mark of 51 feet, 1 3/4 inches. She also had a personal best in the long jump at 19-11 3/4 for second place.

She finished the 800 in 2:13.19 to secure the record.

Day-Monroe was recently confirmed as one of the pentathlon participants for next month’s IAAF World Indoor Championships in Sopot, Poland.

She gained an invite based on her best result from 2013, her 6,550 heptathlon score at the U.S. Championships.
