High School Roundup: Cortez leads Estancia

THERMAL — Senior midfielder Abarham Cortez scored in the 84th minute off a throw-in from Christian Monroy to lead the Estancia High boys’ soccer team to a 1-0 win at Desert Mirage in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 5 playoffs. Thursday.

Goalie Enrique Valle made five saves for the Eagles (14-5-5), who took 10 shots on goal.

Estancia will play host to Granite Hills in the second round Tuesday. Eagles Coach Robert Castellano said he will try to schedule the game for 5 p.m., but will receive confirmation Friday.

Granite Hills (13-6-3), the Desert Sky League champion, won at home against Paso Robles, 4-3, on penalty kicks, after a 1-1 tie, on Thursday.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Sage Hill 4, Heritage Christian 0

Anthony Gil, Juan Rodriguez, Nikolai Sadeghi and Kavi Sakraney scored for the Lightning in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 6 playoffs Thursday at Sage Hill.

Sadeghi also had two assists for Sage Hill (15-1-2).

Will Burns stood out on defense for the Lightning, while Adam Ellingson delivered a strong effort in the shutout.

Sage Hill will play against Pasadena Poly in the second round Tuesday. The home team will be determined by a coin flip.

Pasadena Poly won at home, 3-1, against Linfield Chrsitian in the first round Thursday.

Santa Barbara 1, Newport Harbor 0

The Sailors ended their season at 8-9-4 after falling to the Dons in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs Thursday.

Santa Barbara (19-5-1), the Channel League champion, scored on an own goal off a corner kick in the 83rd minute.

Goalie Victor Negrete made six saves for Newport Harbor.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Estancia 55, Indio 49

INDIO — Josh Mendoza scored 29 points, including five three-pointers, to lead the Eagles to the win in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3A playoffs Wednesday.

Connor Brown added nine points and Martin Harry finished with eight points for Estancia (10-17).

The Ealges play host to Whittier Pioneer, the No. 6 seed, Friday at 7 p.m.

Pioneer (17-10), which tied for second in the Del Rio League, defeated Ridgecrest Burroughs, 64-40, in the first round.

Crossroads 63, Sage Hill 44

SANTA MONICA — The Lightning ended their season at 15-10 after losing in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4A playoffs Wednesday.

No. 6-seeded Crossroads, the Delphic League champion, improved to 17-5.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Marlborough 76, Costa Mesa 43

LOS ANGELES — Danielle Obong scored 22 points to lead Costa Mesa in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4AA playoffs Thursday.

Aubriona Mathis and Jacqueline Guerrero added seven points each for Costa Mesa (14-12).

Marlborough, the No. 6 seed and the Sunshine League champion, improved to 18-4.

Santa Clara 58, Sage Hill 27

SANTA CLARA — The Lightning ended their season at 6-17 after losing in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Divison 5AA playoffs Thursday.

Santa Clara, the No. 3 seed who finished third in the Tri-Valley League, improved to 19-6.
