College Roundup: UCI men’s volleyball wins at Stanford

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. Stanford

STANFORD — Sophomore Tamir Hershko had 22 kills and five block assists, and senior Zack La Cavera had 19 kills, a team-best 13 digs and a team-leading four aces to help the No. 4-ranked Anteaters rally for a 25-27, 27-25, 25-27, 25-20 win in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play Friday.

Hershko hit .410, while Travis Woloson (12 kills) and Roberto Frazzoni (36 assists) came off the bench to spark the ‘Eaters (14-3, 9-2 in conference).

Michael Brinkley had 12 digs for UCI, for whom Andrew Benz chipped in six kills and five block assists.

Stanford fell to 4-10, 3-7.

Orange Coast def. Moorpark

MOORPARK — The visiting Pirates rallied for a 23-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-22 nonconference triumph on Friday.

No statistics were available.

BASEBALL

Vanguard 4, Westmont 0

SANTA BARBARA — Sean Isaac and Marshall McKinnon combined on a two-hit shutout for the visiting Lions in the opener of a three-game Golden State Athletic Conference series on Friday.

Isaac allowed one hit in 5 1/3 innings, but walked six, while striking out four. He earned the win and is 3-1.

McKinnon allowed one hit, struck out four and walked one to close the game and notch his second save.

Justin Vega, Brock Eissman, Kevin Bettencourt and Brandon Sandoval had runs batted in for the Lions (13-5, 10-3 in conference).

Westmont fell to 13-4, 8-4.

Cal 6, UC Irvine 1

BERKELEY — Sophomore designated hitter Andrew Martinez belted his fourth home run of the season for the lone UCI highlight in the opener of a four-game nonconference series on Friday at Cal.

Grant Palmer was two for four and Mikey Duarte was two for five to account for half of the Anteaters’ eight hits.

Elliot Surrey allowed seven hits and four earned runs in six innings to take the loss and is now 0-1.

UCI is 0-4.

Cal is 3-2.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

Host Vanguard University swept Whittier, winning the first game, 4-0, and the second game, 10-2, in nonconference play Friday.

Alexandra Olvera allowed five hits and struck out five in a seven-inning shutout in the opener.

Breanne Gomez had three runs batted in, while Lauryn Cooper and Taylor Wilson were both two for three for the Lions in the first game.

In the second game, Shelby Kuryllo was three for three with three RBIs and two runs.

Taylor Hallahan was two for three with one RBI, while Brittney Boggs was one for two with two RBIs and two runs and Kaitlin Estes was two for three.

Vanguard improved to 11-1.

Whittier is 6-3.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Hawaii 75, UC Irvine 37

HONOLULU — Mokun Fajemisin led the visiting Anteaters with 11 points in the Big West Conference game that ended late Thursday night.

Raelyn Cheung-Sutton had eight points, six rebounds, three assists and one steal for UCI (5-21, 2-9 in conference).

Hawaii (18-7, 10-2) amassed a 59-25 rebounding advantage.

MEN’S TENNIS

Vanguard 9, Biola 0

LA MIRADA — Daymon Jackson won all 12 games at No. 4 singles to lead the visiting No. 4-ranked Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference match Friday.

Fabio Silva (No. 1 singles), Roger Muri (No. 2) and Filip Burnac (No. 5) all dropped only two games in straight-set wins for the Lions (8-0, 5-0 in conference).

Biola is 3-3, 2-3.
