College Roundup: UCI edges Hawaii in overtime

MEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Irvine 60, Hawaii 56 (OT)

HONOLULU — The visiting Anteaters made nine of 12 free throws in overtime after missing seven of 10 in regulation to earn the Big West Conference win Thursday night.

UCI (18-9, 9-2 in conference), scored the first four points of overtime and held on to avenge a 90-86 overtime loss to the Rainbow Warriors at Bren Events Center and retain sole possession of first in the Big West.

Luke Nelson had 12 points to lead the winners, for which Mamadou Ndiaye, Will Davis and Chris McNealy had 11 points apiece. Ndiaye led the team with nine rebounds.

Hawaii fell to 18-8, 7-5.

BASEBALL

Orange Coast 5, Long Beach 1

LONG BEACH — The visiting Pirates scored two in the eight and three in the ninth to claim the nonconference game on Thursday.

Sophomore first baseman Chris Iriart was three for five with one run batted in, while Tommy Bell was two for four with two RBIs and Cody Nulph was two for five with one RBI for the winners (10-2).

Sophomore David Hill worked eight innings to improve to 5-0. He struck out 14 and walked none while allowing 10 hits and one earned run.

OCC had 11 hits off two Vikings pitchers.

Long Beach is 3-6.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Hawaii 55, UC Irvine 54

Senior Camille Buckley had 17 points and 10 rebounds for her 12th double-double of the season in the Big West Conference game Thursday at Bren Events Center.

Buckley made seven of 11 field-goal attempts, but Morgan Mason made a put-back with one second remaining to lift the visitors to victory.

UCI senior Vanessa Aguilar (15 points) made two free throws with 1:27 left to give the hosts (12-13, 5-6 in conference) a 54-53 lead.

It was UCI’s second straight loss, its first two-game losing steak since December.

Hawaii improved to 14-10, 8-4.
