College Roundup: Jackson’s hot hitting fuels Lions’ softball sweep

Junior right fielder Gabrielle Jackson was a combined five for six with six runs batted in and two doubles, as host Vanguard University swept Embry Riddle in a nonconference softball doubleheader Saturday.

Vanguard claimed an 8-0 victory in the opener. Junior catcher Breanne Gomez and junior shortstop Haley Croce each were two for two, while sophomore starting pitcher Taylor Doyle scattered five hits in four shutout innings, striking out five to improve to 3-0.

Freshman Taylor Wilson and junior Taylor Hallahan each had two hits and scored twice as Vanguard won the second game, 9-1. Sophomore Alexandra Olvera allowed one earned run and six hits to improve to 2-0.

Vanguard is now 9-2, while Embry Riddle is 1-3.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Riverside 87,

UC Irvine 75

RIVERSIDE — UCI senior forward Camille Buckley had 28 points and 15 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season in Saturday’s Big West Conference game.

Jasmine Bernard added 14 points for the Anteaters (12-12, 5-5 in conference), who could not hold a 41-34 halftime advantage. Kelly Meggs scored nine points, all on a trio of three-pointers.

Brittany Crain scored a team-high 22 for UC Riverside (5-19, 1-10), which snapped a 16-game losing streak.

UC Irvine plays host to Hawaii on Thursday at the Bren Events Center.

BASEBALL

Doubleheader

SANTA CLARITA — The Master’s College swept visiting Vanguard, 5-3 and 9-3, in Golden State Athletic Conference play Saturday.

Bret Collins was two for three and Michael Flores had two runs battled in for the Lions in the opener.

In the second game, Collins was two for three with a run batted in, while John Schwer was two for three with an RBI.

No. 12-ranked The Master’s improved to 16-2, 10-2 in conference.

Vanguard is 9-6, 4-5.

MEN’S TENNIS

Vanguard 9,

Hope International 0

Stefan Kilchhofer won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles for the Lions in Saturday’s Golden State Athletic Conference match at Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Kilchhofer teamed with Daymon Johnson to win at No. 1 doubles, 8-2.

Roger Muri and Filip Burnac also won in singles and teamed for a doubles win for the Lions.

No. 3-ranked Vanguard improved to 3-1, 2-0 in conference.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Hope International 0

Juliet LaBarthe and Sophie Angner both won in singles and teamed for a doubles win for the Lions in Saturday’s Golden State Athletic Conference match at Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Gabriele Alford, Ashley Wao-Udin and Michaele Sullivan each won singles matches, while Wao-Udin and Brooke Ferslov won in doubles. The Lions, who did not lose a set, also picked up two forfeit wins.

Vanguard, ranked No. 3 in the NAIA, improved to 2-2, 2-0 in conference.

USC 7, UC Irvine 0

LAGUNA NIGUEL — Marivick Mamiit and Sarah Stadfelt scored an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles, but No. 9 USC ultimately took the doubles point.

Franziska Goettsching had the best singles performance for the Anteaters, falling 6-4, 6-4 in the nonconference match Saturday at Laguna Niguel Racquet Center.

UC Irvine is now 3-4.

TRACK AND FIELD

Husky Classic

SEATTLE — UC Irvine junior Itos Aikhionbare finished third in the shot put at the indoor event Saturday at Dempsey Indoor.

Aikhionbare posted a mark of 48 feet, 83/4 inches in the field of 39 competitors.

UCI freshman Megan George was sixth in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.66 seconds, while junior Colleen Lillig was sixth in the mile in 5 minutes, 8.86 seconds.
