High School Roundup: Locals secure CIF berths

BOY’S BASKETBALL

Newport Harbor 72,

Fountain Valley 65

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Senior guard Nic Sargeant had 27 points to match a season high, and added 10 rebounds Friday to help the visiting Sailors clinch one of the Sunset League’s three automatic berths into the CIF Southern Section playoffs.

Newport Harbor (14-11, 5-3 in league) is in third place, one game back of second-place Edison. Los Alamitos is in first at 8-0.

With two games left next week, the Sailors have to win out and hope Edison loses once to share second place with the Chargers. Newport Harbor last finished second in league during the 2007-08 season.

Joey Faris had 16 points and 10 rebounds for Newport Harbor, while Caleb O’Neil added 10 points and nine rebounds.

Costa Mesa 63,

Calvary Chapel 52

SANTA ANA — Senior point guard Sean Comer had 17 points, five assists, six rebounds and two steals for the Mustangs, who clinched at least second place in the Orange Coast League on Friday.

The Mustangs (18-7, 6-2 in league) are two games ahead of third-place Godinez and they hold the head-to-head tiebreaker against Godinez.

Costa Mesa is one win away from matching the school’s single-season record for victories.

Costa Mesa’s Daniel Azurin had 20 points and Kyle Hefner chipped in 14.

Oronde Crenshaw had eight points and five rebounds.

Corona del Mar 67,

University 52

Senior Tyler Lopp produced 11 points for the host Sea Kings on Friday, keeping them in first place in the Pacific Coast League.

CdM (18-5, 7-1 in league) looks to claim its first league title since the 2010-11 season. The Sea Kings, ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Division 3AA, are at Beckman on Tuesday and at Northwood on Thursday.

Northwood (6-2) gave CdM its only league loss.

Ryan Moss had 10 points for the Sea Kings and Jeff Johnston and Sam Kobrine had nine points apiece.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Newport Harbor 3, Fountain Valley 1

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Jose Garfias and Johnny Arroyo each had a goal and an assist to help the visiting Sailors clinch third place in the Sunset League and a guaranteed berth in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs on Friday.

Hugo Enriquez added a goal and Victor Negrete had five saves for the Tars (8-8-3, 5-4 in league), who can do no better or worse than third.

It’s the second straight trip to the playoffs for Newport Harbor.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Newport Harbor 8,

Mater Dei 7

IRVINE — Newport Harbor High senior Christina O’Beck scored the game-winning goal with 59 seconds left, helping the Sailors come back to win the Irvine Southern California Championships quarterfinal match at Woollett Aquatics Center.

O’Beck finished with four goals for the Sailors, who rallied from a 6-2 deficit early in the third quarter. Heidi Fults scored twice, while Kate Pipkin and Ellie Reid added goals and Rachel Whitelegge dished out two assists.

Carlee Kapana made eight saves for the Sailors (19-4), and Cleo Harrington had six.

No. 2-seeded Newport Harbor plays No. 3 Foothill in a semifinal match at 11 a.m. Saturday at Woollett.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

University 47,

Corona del Mar 39

Sophomore forward Natalia Bruening had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the host Sea Kings, who moved into a three-way tie for second place in the Pacific Coast League.

The Sea Kings (17-7, 5-3 in league) share second with Woodbridge and Beckman. CdM split the two-game series with Woodbridge and it beat Beckman the first time around.

CdM closes out league play at Beckman on Tuesday and at Northwood on Thursday, both games are at 7 p.m.

CdM’s Kelly Tam had seven points and Kate Thompson made two three-pointers.

University (7-1) is in first.
