MEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 72, Hope International 69 (OT)

Preston Wynne scored 25 points to lead the No. 12-ranked Lions past No. 23 Hope in Golden State Athletic Conference action Saturday.

Chris Gorman scored 16 points and DeAngelo Jons added 10 points for Vanguard (19-2, 6-0 in conference).

Hope is 14-7, 2-4.

Gorman scored all of the Lions points in overtime, as Vanguard outscored Hope, 7-4. He knocked down a three-pointer with 1:09 left and hit a jumper with 20 seconds left for a 72-69 lead.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 88, Hope International 71

No. 1-ranked Vanguard remained undefeated with the Golden State Athletic Conference win Saturday.

Taylor Belmont led the way with 24 opints. Samantha Doucette scored 20 opints and Nicole Ballestero finished with 19 points for the Lions (17-0, 6-0 in conference).

Leigha Bednar pulled down 11 rebounds for Vanguard.

Hope is 15-5, 4-2.

Cal Poly 84, UC Irvine 79

Camille Buckley pulled down a school-record 26 rebounds but it was not enough for the Anteaters in the Big West Conference game at the Bren Center Thursday.

Buckley broke the school record of 23 previously held by Jinelle Williams in 1994. The senior forward was one shy of the Big West record of 27 and is tied with Norfolk State’s Rachel Gordon (vs. Texas Pan American 11/29/13) for most rebounds in the country this season. Buckley also recorded a team-high 19 points in 33 minutes of action for her ninth double-double of the year.

UCI had good production off the bench with senior guard Vanessa Aguilar recording 16 points, including four three-pointers in 19 minutes and senior forward Jasmine Bernard adding 15 points, two blocks and eight caroms, which tied her season-high in rebounds. Senior guard Kelly Meggs totaled nine points, while junior forward Methlyn Onogomuho had six points and eight rebounds. Senior guard Jennifer Tsurumoto recorded seven points and six assists and senior forward Laurenn Spinazze had seven rebounds for UCI (10-11, 3-4 in conference).

Cal Poly is 13-8, 7-1.

UCI will battle Long Beach State Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at the Bren Center. The game is a double-header with the men taking on the 49ers at 7:30 p.m.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Stanford Invitational

PALO ALTO — The No. 5-ranked Anteaters improved to 6-0 after winning twice Saturday, beating UC Davis, 11-4, and No. 6 Hawaii, 9-4.

McKenna Mitchell scored four goals for UCI to close out the day against UC Davis.

Annika Bergesen, Jessy Cardey and Hannah Croghan scored two goals each for UCI Saturday morning against Hawaii.

UCI will put its undefeated mark on the line with a matchup against the host Cardinal, ranked No. 2 in the nation, Sunday at 8 a.m.

BASEBALL

Doubleheader

Undefeated Vanguard swept Arizona Christian, earning a 4-2 win and a 2-1, seven-inning victory in Golden State Athletic Conference action.

Pitcher Scott Torrey struck out six and allowed four hits in the seven-inning win.

Brandon Sandoval went three for four with a run, while Thomas Mobley was two for three with two runs batted in for Vanguard (7-0, 3-0 in conference).

TRACK & FIELD

UW Invitational

SEATTLE, Wash. — UC Irvine junior Itos Aikhionbare’s sixth-place finish in the shotput led the Anteaters’ women’s indoor track and field team at the UW Invitational in Seattle Saturday.

Aikhionbare had a mark of 46 feet, 11 inches in the field of 28 competitors. Melanie Speech placed 20th at 39-9 3/4.

Senior Carlotta Pham finished 13th of 25 in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:32.28 and junior Kaycee Holcomb was 16th of 53 runners in the mile run in 5:05.42.

Freshman Ariel Cheng placed 12th in the pole vault with a mark of 11-0 1/4.

UCI travels back to Seattle in two weeks for the Husky Classic Feb. 14-15 at Dempsey Indoor.
