High School Roundup: Sargeant drills buzzer-beater

Newport Harbor senior guard Nic Sargeant swished the game-winning three-pointer from half-court at the buzzer, lifting the Sailors over Marina, 56-55, in Wednesday’s Sunset League boys’ basketball game at home.

Sargeant made the shot after an inbound play with four seconds left. He finished with 20 points for the Sailors (12-10, 3-2 in league), who are in third place in league after the first round. Caleb O’Neil added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Sailors play at Huntington Beach on Friday.

Estancia 52, Calvary Chapel 50

Josh Mendoza scored 22 points for Estancia in the Orange Coast League game Wednesday.

Martin Harry added 13 points and Caena McReynolds had nine points for Estancia (7-14), which plays host to Lagunna Beach Friday.

SANTA ANA — Jesus Acevedo recorded a hat trick for Estancia in the Orange Coast League match Wednesday at Centennial Park

Carlos Herrera, Marco Pineda, Chris Moya and Marco Solis scored one goal each for Estancia, while Steve Ceja and Christian Monroy produced two assists each.

Omar Torres, Pineda and Chris Moya had one assist each and goalie Enrique Valle made one save for Estancia.

Newport Harbor 1, Marina 0

Hugo Enriquez scored for the Sailors in the Sunset League game Wednesday.

Manolo Laguna had the assist for Newport Harbor (6-7-3, 3-3-0 in league).

WRESTLING

Corona del Mar 63, Northwood 18

Senior co-captains Chris Croxton (126 pounds), Adam Reines (138) and Kaden Ebbinga (152) each won their final regular-season match in the Pacific Coast League dual Wednesday.

Also winning for CdM (7-6, 2-3 in league) were Oliver Boyse (129), Falcon Freeman (132), Jake Lytell, (145), Brad Hostetler (160), Jules Marine (182), Eric Asaro (195), Matt Morton (220) and Garrett Cleary (285).

The Sea Kings will next compete in the league finals at Irvine High on Saturday.

Ebbinga (18 pins) improved to 32-4, 5-0 in league. Croxton (19 pins) is 28-7, 5-0 in league, and Reines (nine pins) is 18-9, 4-1 in league.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Newport Harbor 14, Marina 1

On senior night, seniors Christina O’Beck and Heidi Fults each scored five goals to pace the Sailors in the Sunset League game Wednesday night at home.

Isabel Leveque had two goals and two steals for Newport Harbor (15-4, 3-0 in league). Emma Erickson and Chanel Schilling also scored. Senior Cleo Harrington made 11 saves and Carlee Kapana five for the Sailors, ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division 1.

Maddie Goodell (one assist), Sydney Kohlenberger (two steals) and Ivy Vega were the other seniors honored for the Sailors, who play host to Huntington Beach on Feb. 5 at 7 p.m.

Saddleback 13, Costa Mesa 12

SANTA ANA — Bridgette Smitheram and Lauren Smith each scored four goals for the Mustangs in Wednesday’s Orange Coast League game on the road.

Hayley Peterson and Melissa Folkerts each scored twice for Costa Mesa (9-12, 2-1 in league). Antonia Velasquez made seven saves.

The Mustangs, who most likely will finish in third place in league, conclude league play at Laguna Beach on Feb. 12.
