LONG BEACH — Ty Hutchins had 16 kills to lead the Pirates to a 25-19, 25-23, 20-25, 25-18 win in both teams’ season opener on Wednesday at LBCC.

Jim Webb had 14 kills for OCC.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Orange Coast 56, Riverside 49

Jasmine Matar and Caitlin Bunting each scored 14 points for the Pirates in Wednesday’s Orange Empire Conference game at OCC.

Dayanara Armenta added 12 points for the Pirates (13-9, 4-2 in conference).

Orange Coast starts the second half of conference play Feb. 5, at home against Irvine Valley at 5:30 p.m.

Riverside 83, Orange Coast 69

Devaun Evans had a team-high 15 points for the Pirates in Wednesday’s Orange Empire Conference game at OCC.

Brad Buchignani added 14 points for OCC (7-16, 1-5 in conference). Henry Nguyen scored 13 off the bench, including a trio of three-pointers.

OCC plays host to Irvine Valley on Feb. 5 at 7:30 p.m.
