CMHS cheer dominates the weekend

The Costa Mesa High cheerleaders just keep winning.

The highly successful program showed its dominance with big-time performances during two competitions this past weekend.

It was also a big weekend for CMHS cheer coach Kori Johnson, who was awarded the State title of Cheer coach and Advisor of the Year. She was nominated for the award and then received numerous recommendation letters as well as review of her impressive cheer resume and was voted the 2015 Coach of the Year.

The Mustangs started out competing in the USA Regionals at University High in Irvine to secure bids to Anaheim Nationals.

The team has competed in the UCA Nationals in Florida for the past five years, but due to personal reasons of the coach, the team won’t be heading back East this year.

Still, Costa Mesa dominated over seven teams and took first place in both varsity advanced stunt and varsity non tumbling, securing two bids for nationals.

As if that wasn’t enough, the Mustangs traveled to Ontario the following day to compete in the CheerPros State Championships. The varsity advanced stunt group and dance soloist Margarita Cruz took first place and the state champion titles.

The team medaled in third place against some intense competitors.

Cruz also was honored as she was named to the Cheer Pros All State team for the second year in a row.
