MEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 76, Arizona Christian 75

PHOENIX — Chris Gorman led the visiting Lions with 31 points, four assists and two steals in the Golden State Athletic Conference game on Saturday.

Keith Mason had 14 points and seven rebounds, while Preston Wynne and DeAngelo Jones added 11 points apiece for No. 20-ranked Vanguard (17-2, 4-0 in conference), which remains alone in first place.

Gorman made nine of 16 field-goal tries, including four for nine form three-point range. He was also nine for 10 from the foul line.

Arizona Christian, which led, 34-28 at halftime, fell to 15-4, 1-3.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 80, Arizona Christian 49

PHOENIX — Sophomore Samantha Doucette led the visiting Lions with 23 points and eight rebounds in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Nicole Ballestero had 19 points and five assists and Taylor Belmont chipped in 10 points, five rebounds and four assists for the winners (15-0, 4-0 in conference), ranked No. 1 in the NAIA.

Arizona Christian fell to 5-13, 0-4.

BASEBALL

Doubleheader

SAN MARCOS — Visiting Vanguard University swept both nonconference games to improve to 4-0 on Saturday, topping Cal State San Marcos, 8-2 and 14-14.

The Lions scored eight runs in the top of the seventh and final inning in Game 2 to erase a 10-6 deficit, then held on as the Cougars scored three in the bottom of the frame.

In the second game, Bret Collins went four for five with four runs batted in, while Brandon Sandoval, Nick Rodda and Michael Flores had two RBIs apiece for the Lions.

Brady Moore earned the pitching win and Roberto Johnson got the final two outs for his first save.

In Game 1, Richard Perry worked seven innings, allowing two runs, both unearned, and six hits to earn the victory.

Collins was two for five with a triple and two RBIs, and John Schwer was also two for five with two RBIs.

John Collins had three RBIs, while Greg Younger was three for four with one RBI for the winners.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

UC Santa Barbara tournament

SANTA BARBARA — No. 6-ranked UC Irvine won a pair of games Saturday to open the season at the UC Santa Barbara Winter Invite.

UCI defeated Cal Baptist, 19-4, and handled San Jose State, 11-6.

Danielle Warde led the Anteaters with five goals against Cal Baptist, while Jesse Cardey had four and Hannah Croghan added two.

Against San Jose State, Cardey had four goals and Croghan added three.

UCI’s Jillian Yocum had 11 saves against San Jose State and eight against Cal Baptist.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. UCSanta Barbara

SANTA BARBARA — Opposite Zack La Cavera led UCI with 16 kills and a career-high six aces in the Anteaters’ 25-21, 25-23, 16-25, 25-22, 17-15 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation win at Rob Gym Saturday.

Freshman Tamir Hersko added 10 kills, while outside hitters Connor Hughes and Kyle Russell each had eight kills, which is a season-best best for Russell. Freshman setter Michael Saeta had a career-high 53 set assists, a team-high 10 digs and four block assists. Middle blocker Scott Kevorken posted a season and team-high seven total blocks to go with five kills and middle blocker Collin Mehring had six kills and six total blocks for UCI (5-4, 2-3 in the MPSF).

UCSB is 3-2, 2-2.

UCI will travel to No. 3 UCLA Monday for a 7 p.m. match at Pauley Pavilion.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Hawaii 85, Hawaii 59

HONOLULU — Forward Camille Buckley had a game-high 19 points and eight rebounds for the Anteaters in the Big West Conference game Saturday.

Guard Jennifer Tsurumoto followed with 16 points and guard Kelly Meggs had seven points for UCI (9-10, 2-3 in conference).
