High School Roundup: Sage Hill edges St. Margaret’s

Claire Novotny scored the game-winning goal on a free kick in the 73rd minute in Friday’s Academy League game at Sage Hill.

Paige Burke also scored in the 14th minute for Sage Hill, which beat rival St. Margaret’s for the first time since 2008. It is also the first time in program history that Sage scored more than one goal on St. Margaret’s.

Kekai Whitford made 10 saves for Sage Hill (8-5-2, 4-1 in league), which plays host to Oxford Academy on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Costa Mesa 63, Calvary Chapel 36

Sean Comer had 26 points, seven rebounds and four assists for the Mustangs in Friday’s Orange Coast League game at home.

Kyle Hefner scored 13 points for Mesa, and Daniel Azurin added 11.

Costa Mesa (15-6, 3-1 in league) plays at Laguna Beach on Wednesday.

Saddleback 49, Estancia 45

SANTA ANA — Josh Mendoza scored 19 points for the Eagles in the Orange Coast League game Friday.

Martin Harry finished with 10 points for Estancia (1-3 in league), which plays host to Calvary Chapel on Wednesday.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Corona del Mar 53, Northwood 38

Senior guard Keaton Gaughan had 15 points, including four three-pointers, in the Pacific Coast League game Friday at CdM.

Sophomore Natalia Bruening added 12 points and 10 rebounds for CdM (14-6, 3-2 in league). Senior guard Chanel Wosoughkia scored seven points.

CdM, ranked No. 7 in the CIF Southern Section Division 3AA poll, plays host to Laguna Hills in a nonleague game Saturday at noon.

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO — Milad Rohani netted the equalizer in the second half for the Lightning in the Academy League match Friday.

Nicolai Sadeghi recorded the assist for Sage Hill, which had goalie Adam Ellingson and defender Will Burns stand out on defense.
