MEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 69, Concordia 57

The host Lions upset the No. 12-ranked Eagles in a Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

DeAngelo Jones and Chris Gorman had 16 points apiece, while Zach Allmon had 13 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Lions (13-8, 5-3 in conference).

Jones made four of six field-goal attempts and was seven for seven from the foul line.

Allmon was six for eight from the field, while Gorman was nine for 10 from the foul line and had a team-best seven assists.

Vanguard posted a 48-33 rebounding advantage to overcome losing the turnover battle, 23-15.

Concordia fell to 17-4, 6-2.

Saddleback 70, Orange Coast 55

Devasyia Hagger scored 17 points to lead the Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Friday.

Henry Nguyen added 10 points for OCC (4-13, 2-3 in conference).

Saddleback is 22-2, 5-1.

BASEBALL

Doubleheader

Visiting Vanguard University split the Golden State Athletic Conference twin bill on Saturday, winning the first game, 9-7, and falling, 7-6, in the seven-inning second game.

Scott Torrey allowed one run and five hits in seven innings to earn the win in Game 1, in which Brandon Sandoval went two for five with three runs batted in for the Lions.

Jose Rojas was two for four with a home run and two RBIs, while Justin Davis and Taylor McKnight had two hits apiece and David Stone drove in two for the Lions.

Marshall McKinnon got the last two outs to record his first save.

In Game 2, Biola scored twice in the seventh to erase a 6-5 deficit and hand Vanguard (5-1, 2-1 in conference) its first loss.

Brett Collins was two for four with two RBIs and Stone drove in two more runs in the second game for VU.

Biola is 2-2, 1-2.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. Cal Baptist

Kyle Russell had 11 kills and Zack La Cavera added 10 as the No. 3-ranked Anteaters posted a 25-17, 25-18, 25-16 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation sweep Saturday.

Tamir Hershko had four of UCI’s season-best 11 aces.

UCI is 7-2, 3-1 in conference.

Cal Baptist is 3-5, 1-4.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Hawaii 85, UC Irvine 50

Mokun Fajemisin had 16 points, five rebounds and four blocked shots to lead the host Anteaters in the Big West Conference game Saturday.

Irene Chavez added 12 points for UCI (3-17, 0-5 in conference).

Hawaii is 11-7, 3-2.

Saddleback 77, Orange Coast 59

Jasmine Matar scored 31 points to lead the Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Friday.

Nicole Beaudoin added 10 points for OCC (3-16, 0-5 in conference).

Saddleback is 12-11, 3-3.

Lumberjack Team Challenge

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — UC Irvine freshman Persis William-Mensah began her collegiate career in style, setting the UC Irvine indoor record in the 60-meter dash on Saturday

William-Mensah posted a time of 7.59 seconds, which converts to 7.63 at altitude, to break the previous UCI record of 7.69 set by Vanessa Houston in 2010.

William-Mensah finished third among 22 competitors in the event at Northern Arizona’s Skydome, while UCI freshman Taisyn Crutchfield was ninth in 7.85.

Ariel Cheng placed third in the pole vault with a mark of 12 feet.

William-Mensah was also sixth in the 200 in 25.68, while Crutchfield was 10th in 26.14.

Junior Kaulyn Lee-McNeill was fourth in the 800 in 2:18.96 and junior Lauren Hall was ninth in 2:25.63.

In the 60-meter hurdles, junior Paige Bushnell was fifth in 8.98 and Tyra Jones sixth in 9.24.

Senior Lily Trinh finished sixth in the 400 in 59.65 and Tatiana Martinez was 10th in 1:02.29.

Marthie Ponty was eighth in the mile in 5:51.81, while Courtney Sharar was ninth (5:57.45) and Pearl Law 10th (5:57.94).

UCI’s 4x400 relay of Lee-McNeill, Jones, Trinh and Bushnell was third in 4:05.08.

In field events, Madelyn Sando placed fourth in the high jump (5-1), Lauren Ellison was fifth in the triple jump (34-11 3/4) and Dazhana Bauer-Jackson was 10th in the weight throw (36-10 1/4).

In the multiple dual-meet scoring format, UCI went 2-3 with victories over Cal State Bakersfield and Southern Utah.

The Anteaters travel to Seattle for the Washington Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
