Senior point guard Taylor Belmont posted her first career triple-double with 14 points, 14 assists and 10 rebounds to lead the host No. 1-ranked Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference triumph Saturday.

Belmont, who had 22 points and 13 assists in Tuesday’s win at San Diego Christian, had three steals and zero turnovers and was six for seven from the free-throw line against Biola.

VU (13-0, 2-0 in the GSAC) also received 23 points apiece from senior Nicole Ballestero and sophomore Samantha Doucette, while junior Ashleigh Anderson chipped in 13 points, seven rebounds and four steals.

Biola (5-13, 0-2) shot .23.2% from the field (13 for 56) and had 24 of the game’s 29 turnovers. The Eagles missed all 13 of their three-point attempts.

Vanguard, which missed its first 16 field-goal attempts before finding its range, went more than 27 minutes without committing a turnover.

The Lions visit reigning GSAC and NAIA champion Westmont on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Westmont (11-4, 2-0) is ranked No. 12.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. Cal Baptist

The No. 7-ranked Anteaters hit .514 in a 25-21, 25-16, 25-13 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation win over Cal Baptist at the Bren Center Saturday.

Four of the six Anteater attackers were errorless as UCI committed only eight miscues the entire match. The .514 hitting percentage (45-8-72) is the best in the MPSF this season.

The Anteater attack was led by junior opposite Zack La Cavera with 15 kills, hitting .500. Senior outside Jeremy Dejno totaled 11 kills, while senior outside hitter Connor Hughes had eight kills and hit .615 (8-0-13). Freshman middle blocker Andrew Benz, in his first career start, hit .857 with six kills on seven swings. Senior middle blocker Collin Mehring hit .800 (4-0-5) and had a team-high three block assists. Freshman setter Michael Saeta posted 39 set assists, two aces and two blocks. Libero Michael Brinkley had a team-best six digs.

UCI (4-4, 1-3 in the MPSF) travels to UC Santa Barbara Saturday for a 7 p.m. match at Rob Gym.

Cal Baptist is 1-4, 1-3.

TRACK & FIELD

Aikhionbare wins shotput

SEATTLE, Wash. — UC Irvine junior Itos Aikhionbare won the shotput in the women’s indoor track and field opener at the UW Indoor Preview in Seattle, Wash., Saturday.

Aikhionbare posted an indoor career-best mark of 49 feet, 3 inches to earn first place in the event by three feet. UCI’s Melanie Speech finished 12th with a career-best 38-9 1/2.

Redshirt senior Ericka Nowell finished eighth overall of 57 competitors in the 400 meters with a time of 58.62 and Lauren Hackney was 18th in 59.87.

Chelsea Schneider won her section of the 800 meters and placed ninth overall of 28 runners with a time of 2:17.29.

Rebecka Miranda finished ninth of 34 in the triple jump with a mark of 37-4 1/2.

Ariel Cheng was 15th of 29 overall in the pole vault with a mark of 10-11 3/4.

The Anteaters return to Seattle in two weeks for the UW Invitational Jan. 31-Feb. 1 at Dempsey Indoor.
