VENTURA — Sophomore forward Michelle Angel had 16 points for the Pirates in their opening game of the Ventura tournament Friday night at Ventura College.

Jenna Arnett scored 13 for OCC (8-6), while Dayanara Armenta and Jessica Johnson had 11 points each.

The Pirates will play either host Ventura or Southwestern in a tournament semifinal at 7 p.m. Saturday.

UC Irvine 66, Bakersfield 52

BAKERSFIELD — Forwards Camille Buckley and Methlyn Onogomuho were active down low for the Anteaters at the Icardo Center Friday.

Buckley recorded her third double-double of the year with a career-high 19 points and 15 rebounds, scoring 17 of her team-best points in the second half. Onogomuho had her first double-double of the year and second of her career with a season-high 12 points and career-best 11 rebounds.

Guard Jennifer Tsurumoto had 15 points, three assists and two steals in 38 minutes, while guard Anete Klintsone recorded five points and Mokun Fajemisin and Kelly Meggs added four points apiece for UCI (4-8).

Bakersfield is 2-13.

The Anteaters open Big West Conference play against UC Santa Barbara Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Bren Center.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 82, Quest 55

COSTA MESA — Ennis Whatley Jr. scored 18 points to lead the Lions in the nonconference game Saturday.

Chris Gorman added 14 points and Preston Wynne scored 11 points for Vanguard (9-4).

Quest is 4-5.
