LAKE FOREST — Corona del Mar High boys' basketball coach Ryan Schachter says he's not sure what to think about how his team will fare in an upcoming elite tournament.
Schachter was unsure after he watched his Sea Kings fall behind in the fourth quarter against Tesoro in the North-South Challenge at El Toro High Wednesday.
While the Sea Kings struggled with execution in the final quarter, the Titans took advantage to score a 57-54 nonleague victory.
CdM (6-3) led, 40-34, after three quarters. But Tesoro (9-2) outscored the Sea Kings, 23-14, in the final period. CdM trailed, 55-54, with five seconds left, Schachter said, but the Sea Kings missed a point-blank shot that hit the back of the rim.
After the Titans went up, 57-54, the Sea Kings had a last-second, 25-foot shot miss.
"We didn't execute on offense and we didn't play as a team in the fourth quarter," Schachter said. "We were playing as individuals rather than trusting in the offense and trusting in teammates. It was very frustrating. Tesoro hit some big baskets and we didn't respond to the pressure."
Marcus Bradley led the Sea Kings with 21 points. Danny Cheek scored 16 points and Clayton Ragsdale added 11 points for CdM.
Schachter thought the Sea Kings played well defensively against Tesoro's top player, Dusty Baker. He still went for 26 points, hitting 13 of his 15 free-throw attempts.
CdM opens with Compton Monday in the Holiday Classic, a prestigious tournament at Torrey Pines High.
The four-day event features some of the top programs in the ESPN RISE national rankings: No. 11 Long Beach Poly; No. 21 Taft of Woodland Hills; No. 46 Lincoln of San Diego and No. 48 Bishop O'Dowd of Oakland.
"We are playing great competition," Schachter said. "I don't know what to think about what's going to happen, to be honest. Hopefully we come together as a team and learn to trust each other more. When we play together as a team we have the talent to beat other talented teams. But when we don't play as a team we are very average."
