King, Storch lead Tars’ honors

Newport Harbor High senior Sydney King was named Most Valuable Goalkeeper of the Sunset League to highlight a group of Sailors who earned all-league honors in field hockey.

King will play field hockey at the University of Massachusetts. She helped lead the Sailors to their third straight Los Angeles Field Hockey Assn. Tournament of Champions title last month. She was a key member of all three championship teams and was named the Sunset League’s top goalie the past two years.

Senior Stephanie Storch, Co-MVP of the TOC, was named Most Valuable Midfielder of the Sunset League, as she helped the Tars to the league title.

Taylor Cordeiro, Courtney McIntosh, Madeline Storch and Beth Barnard earned first-team all-league honors.

Cordeiro scored the game-winning goal in the Sailors TOC 1-0 semifinal win against Harvard-Westlake. She also scored a goal in Newport Harbor’s 2-0 win over Huntington Beach in the TOC title game.

Natalie Swift, Mary Yeager and Sophie Evans earned second-team laurels.

CdM’s banner year

The Corona del Mar High freshmen football team capped one of its most successful seasons in recent history with a banquet Dec. 12.

Coach Jerry Jelnick honored 58 players who helped the Sea Kings to an 8-2 record, including a 5-0 run in the Pacific Coast League.

CdM won its second straight PCL title on the freshmen level, as last year’s team also went undefeated in league play.

Brett Olson was named the team’s Most Valuable Player. He was CdM’s top rusher, a leader on special teams and anchored the defense from his inside linebacker position.

Charlie Griffin won the Team Captain Award, as he led the Sea Kings in tackles and interceptions from his strong safety position. He was also one of the leading receivers and rushers on offense.

Quarterback Connor Sage was named the team’s Most Valuable Offensive Player. He started every game at quarterback. He threw 18 touchdown passes and rushed for five more TDs.

Giovanni Gentosi earned the Most Valuable Defensive Player award, as he led the team in sacks, tackles for loss and forced fumbles from his defensive end position.

Ian Redman was named the team’s Outstanding Lineman. At 6-foot-5, Redman was both an excellent run blocker and pass blocker from his right tackle position. Redman also proved to be a force as a defensive tackle.

Chris Beyrooty was named the team’s Most Inspirational Player. He provided great inspiration all season as a running back and defensive back, Jelnick said.
